AML investigators at Brazilian retail banks should learn to check the evidence an agent compiles on cash, correspondent and PEP cases, review its draft reports and exit proposals, and catch where it has trusted a customer's word over the bank's own records. Suspicion, reporting and exits stay with named investigators.
What does an AML investigator at a Brazilian retail bank spend time on?
A retail bank's investigators see the whole economy. Cash still matters in many regions, so they review deposits made at branches and at banking correspondents, the lottery outlets, pharmacies and shops that offer basic banking services on the bank's behalf. A run of cash deposits across several correspondents in one town, each just below the bank's internal review level, is a classic pattern to examine.
Other cases involve politically exposed persons and their relatives, payroll accounts receiving salaries that do not match the employer's size, rural clients with seasonal cash flows that can look odd out of season, and accounts used to receive proceeds of fraud before they move on through Pix. Investigators prepare communications to Brazil's financial intelligence unit, including the prescribed communications for certain cash operations, and recommend whether to keep or end relationships.
Where do agents help, and at what depth?
Cash pattern analysis (depth 1). The agent pulls deposits across branches and correspondents, groups them by depositor, beneficiary and location, and flags patterns that suggest splitting. It shows the pattern; the investigator judges it.
PEP review dossiers (depth 2). The agent assembles the customer's relationship history, source of wealth documents and adverse media for periodic PEP reviews, marking each item's provenance, and drafts the review for a person to complete.
Prescribed cash communications (depth 2). Where cash operations meet the conditions for automatic communication, the agent prepares the communication from sealed transaction data for an investigator to check and submit.
Case narratives (depth 2). After the investigator decides to report, the agent drafts the narrative with facts and sources.
Exit proposals (depth 4, held). Ending a relationship affects the customer's access to banking and is hard to undo. The agent drafts the proposal; the decision rests with the people the bank's policy names.
What should investigators never let the agent do?
Never tell a customer, a branch employee or a correspondent that a case is under review or reported; Brazilian AML law forbids disclosing that a communication has been made. Never let the agent close an alert because a customer's explanation, given at a branch, sounds reasonable without checking it against the ledger. Never let it approve or decline account opening at a correspondent, and never let it file. These limits and the reasons for them are set out in what AML investigators should never let an AI agent do.
Branch staff need care here. They often ask investigators why a customer's account was restricted. The agent should never draft an answer that reveals the investigation, and the investigator should know how to respond without tipping off.
What must investigators learn, and what stays with them?
Investigators must learn to read the verdict and the bound that decided it, to weigh provenance, and to correct the agent so it improves. Provenance matters especially in Brazil's cash cases: deposit records are sealed; a branch manager's note about the customer is declared; a local news story is external. A PEP's source of wealth, supported by a verified asset declaration, is signed; their own explanation is declared.
Correction matters because regional patterns vary. If investigators keep overruling the agent on harvest-season cash in an agricultural region, that knowledge should become part of the agent's brief, by the method in banking corrections that improve the agent.
What stays with the investigator: suspicion, reporting, exit recommendations, responding to authorities, and anything said to customers or staff. That accountability is what makes investigators the real control in an agent deployment. It also explains why AI agents will not replace AML investigators, even as they take over most of the gathering.
Which Brazilian rules shape oversight and competence?
Banco Central do Brasil supervises banks and sets AML/CFT requirements: an internal policy, risk assessment, customer due diligence including for politically exposed persons, monitoring of operations, communications to the financial intelligence unit, and training for staff and for banking correspondents. A bank introducing agents into investigations should be able to show the Banco Central who decided each case and how those people were trained.
Brazilian AML law prohibits disclosing communications to the people concerned. The LGPD governs the personal data the agent processes, and the ANPD enforces it; people may ask for a review of decisions made solely by automated processing that affect their interests, which supports keeping exits with people. If the bank also runs brokerage or securities activity, the CVM's rules apply to that business.
The FATF Recommendations, including those on politically exposed persons and suspicious transaction reporting, set the international standard Brazil's framework reflects.
This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.
A 90-day training plan
- Days 1 to 30. Investigators complete foundation learning with the bank's own closed cash and PEP cases. The agent runs at depth 1 on cash pattern analysis in two regions.
- Days 31 to 60. The agent drafts PEP reviews, cash communications and narratives at depth 2. Investigators review every draft, and weekly sessions agree on contested cases, especially regional patterns. Corrections go into the brief.
- Days 61 to 90. Investigators who approve held items complete certification and supervised practice. Branch and correspondent managers get a short briefing on what to say when customers ask about restrictions. Exits stay held.

Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy lets every investigator start with Foundations, free and about four hours, with tests set in their own industry and role. Those who approve held items take the Operator track: about 14 hours, an exam of 40 questions in 60 minutes, and a two-week practicum. The bank's admin view shows progress and expiry dates.
Questions people ask
Can the agent review correspondents' own behaviour?
It can flag correspondents with unusual volumes or patterns at depth 1. Deciding whether a correspondent needs action is for the bank's people.
Should prescribed cash communications ever run at depth 3?
Possibly, after sustained accurate preparation and certification, because the data is sealed and the conditions are defined. Anomalies should still be held.
How do we handle PEP relatives the agent cannot confirm?
The agent should state what it could not verify. The investigator decides how to treat the relationship under the bank's policy.
