Singapore retail banks should train AML investigators to verify the evidence an agent compiles on scam mules and source of wealth, review its draft reports and restriction proposals, and judge where it has relied on weak sources. MAS expects fair, accountable use of AI and trained staff; suspicion and every restriction stay with named investigators.
What does an AML investigator at a Singapore retail bank work on?
Two kinds of case dominate. The first is scam proceeds. Victims are persuaded to transfer money to accounts controlled by fraud networks, often held by people who rented out their accounts or were recruited as mules, and the funds move on within minutes. Investigators trace the flow, decide on restrictions and support recovery where possible.
The second is wealth that does not add up. Retail and priority banking clients include people who have moved assets to Singapore, holders of companies with few staff and large flows, and family members of politically exposed persons. Investigators test whether source of wealth and source of funds are credible and whether a company account is being used as a conduit. Both kinds of case end in decisions to report to Singapore's financial intelligence unit, restrict, exit or keep monitoring, and the bank may also share information with other banks through the regulated channels MAS has set up for that purpose.
Which tasks suit an agent, and at what depth?
Scam flow tracing (depth 1). The agent follows funds from a victim's report through the bank's accounts, showing each hop with time stamps from the ledger. It reveals the path; the investigator decides what to do.
Mule indicators (depth 1). The agent flags accounts with sudden changes in device, login location or counterparties, and dormant accounts that start receiving many small credits.
Source of wealth corroboration (depth 2). The agent compiles what the customer declared, what documents support it and what external sources say, labels each by provenance, and drafts an assessment. The investigator completes it.
Company network analysis (depth 1). The agent links company accounts that share directors, addresses or counterparties.
Report and restriction drafting (depth 2 draft; restrictions held at depth 4). After the investigator decides, the agent drafts the report or the restriction with evidence attached.
How do investigators review the agent's decisions?
The routine is in how AML investigators review an agent's decisions. Start with the verdict and the bound that decided it, then the sources, then the narrative. A source of wealth assessment is only as good as its sources: a sale agreement verified with the counterparty is signed; the customer's summary of their business history is declared; a magazine profile is external. An agent that ranks a magazine profile alongside a verified document has made an error the investigator must catch and correct.
When corrections recur, they belong in the agent's brief and sources, not in a note on one case. Banking corrections that improve the agent gives the method.
Investigators should also know what happens when the agent's authority changes: its certificate lapses after 90 days, and a run that clears no depth drops it to depth 1 the same day. Drafts it used to prepare will arrive as flags until it is recertified.
What stays with the investigator?
Suspicion, reporting, restrictions, exits, information-sharing decisions with other banks and every message to a customer under review. Singapore law prohibits tipping off. These are decisions the bank must explain to MAS, which is why AML investigators are the real control. It is also why the role is not disappearing: as will AI agents replace AML investigators? argues, agents take the gathering and leave more time for judgement.
Which Singapore rules shape oversight and competence?
The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) supervises banks and sets AML/CFT requirements: risk assessment, customer due diligence including enhanced checks for higher-risk customers and politically exposed persons, ongoing monitoring, reporting suspicious transactions to the financial intelligence unit, and training staff. MAS's FEAT principles ask that the use of AI and data analytics in decision-making be fair, ethical, accountable and transparent, which bears directly on an agent that influences decisions about customers. MAS's Technology Risk Management Guidelines set expectations for managing the technology the agent runs on and the access it has.
The Personal Data Protection Act 2012, administered by the PDPC, governs personal data the agent processes. IMDA's Model AI Governance Framework, though voluntary, offers a way to set human involvement by the severity of potential harm: high for restrictions and reports.
The FATF Recommendations set the international standard on which Singapore's AML/CFT regime is built.

A 90-day plan
- Weeks 1 to 4. Investigators complete foundation learning using the bank's own closed scam and wealth cases. The agent runs at depth 1 on scam tracing, mule indicators and company networks.
- Weeks 5 to 8. The agent drafts source of wealth assessments, reports and restrictions at depth 2. Investigators review every draft. Weekly calibration agrees disputed cases; corrections go into the brief and sources.
- Weeks 9 to 13. Investigators who decide on held restrictions complete certification and supervised practice. The bank documents, for its FEAT and technology risk records, who oversees the agent and how they were trained. Restrictions stay held.

Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy runs every lab in a free Build workspace, so investigators can practise reading verdicts and provenance before touching live cases. Those who approve held restrictions take the Operator track and its two-week practicum, signed off by a Pryme assessor. Certificates can be checked at source through VerifyDoc.ai.
Questions people ask
Can the agent restrict a mule account during an active scam?
It drafts the restriction at once with the flow evidence. A named on-duty investigator decides; the approval rota should make that fast.
Should relationship managers see source of wealth assessments?
They should see what they need to collect missing documents. The investigation itself, and any thought of reporting, stays within the AML team.
How does FEAT apply to an investigation agent?
It asks that the agent's influence on decisions be fair, accountable and explainable. Filed verdicts that name the deciding bound and sources help show that.
