Mexican telecoms collections agents should be trained to review what an AI agent drafts and holds, to confirm payments against the operator's own records before acting, and to keep suspensions, handovers to collection firms and any call to a customer's references with a person. Consumer, data and financial rules all apply, and 90 days certifies a desk.
What does collections work look like at a Mexican telco?
Most mobile customers are prepaid, so collections concentrates on postpaid plans, home internet and handsets paid off in monthly instalments, sometimes through a partner bank. A collector's day is reminders by text and messaging apps, calls to customers who have missed a payment, and confirming payments made by bank transfer or with a reference code at a convenience store. Delayed confirmations are a constant source of friction: a customer pays on Friday evening and receives a reminder on Saturday morning.
The hardest calls involve outsourced collection firms and references. Customers often give personal references when they sign a contract, and some collection practices have used them to pressure the customer. A collector at a telco must decide when an account goes to an outside firm and must answer for how that firm behaves.
Which collections tasks can an AI agent handle?
Account view, depth 1. The agent reads the plan, the instalment schedule, payments received through SPEI and convenience-store references, and any open complaint, and briefs the collector before contact.
Reminders, depth 2. The agent drafts reminders in Spanish suited to the channel. A person approves templates and any message outside them. The tone should be firm and polite, never a threat.
Payment matching and promise logging, depth 3. When a SPEI transfer or a store payment appears in the operator's ledger, the agent matches it, closes the promise and stops further reminders. It may also record a promise to pay on a date the policy allows.
Suspension, handover and equipment recovery, held. Suspending a line, passing a debt to a collection firm or pursuing a financed handset changes the customer's position. The agent prepares the evidence and holds the action for a named person. A payment reference that is reported but not yet confirmed should make the operator's own limits refuse suspension until the ledger settles.
What do collectors need to learn, and what stays theirs?
The first skill is provenance. A transfer confirmed in the ledger is sealed. A photo of a store receipt sent by the customer is declared. A trained collector knows that a declared payment should pause the sequence and trigger a check, not be ignored and not be accepted as final. The second is reading verdicts: why a reminder was refused and which bound decided. The third is correcting the agent so the correction sticks, by recording why a draft was wrong. The competency matrix for the collections team sets these out by level, and AI agent skills by role gives the broader view.
These stay with people, without exception:
- any contact with a customer's references, which should be limited to locating the customer and never mention the debt
- the decision to suspend a line or hand the account to a collection firm
- restructuring the handset plan or waiving charges
- calls with customers in distress or disputing the bill
- complaints, including those raised with consumer authorities
Release rights belong in the approver authority matrix for the collections team. The role shifts towards these judgements rather than disappearing, a point made in will AI agents replace collections agents.
Which Mexican rules shape oversight and competence?
Where a handset or plan is financed through a bank or another financial entity, CONDUSEF's rules on collection practice apply. They restrict harassment, threats, contact outside permitted hours and contact with references or third parties about the debt, and they hold the financial entity responsible for the collection firms acting for it. The CNBV supervises those entities, and Banxico runs SPEI, whose transfers give the agent a reliable sealed source for payment confirmation.
For the telco's own debts, the federal consumer protection authority and the telecoms authority set rules on contracts, billing, suspension notice and complaints. Mexico's federal law on personal data held by private parties requires notice, purpose limitation and consent where applicable, which decides what data the agent may read and whom it may contact. Mexico has no dedicated AI law. What AI agent training organisations in Mexico need covers the national picture.

How should the first 90 days of training run?
- Weeks 1 and 2. All collectors, team leads and the liaison for outside collection firms complete the Foundations material. A session works through the payment confirmation problem with real examples of weekend payments.
- Weeks 3 to 6. Shadow review: collectors decide held suspensions and handovers first, then compare with a supervisor's decision.
- Weeks 7 to 10. Reviewers take reviewer training and a two-week practicum on live held items.
- Weeks 11 to 13. Approval rights for suspension and handover go to certified team leads; the rota is built so a certified reviewer is on shift when weekend payments land. Building a reviewer rota for the collections team shows how to size it.
Outside collection firms should complete the Foundations material and know the red lines before they receive any case the agent prepared.
Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy starts the desk on the free Foundations track and certifies reviewers on the Operator track, with tests set in telecoms and collections. Certified Pryme Operator requires a 40-question exam with a pass mark of 32 and a two-week practicum. Certificates are issued through VerifyDoc.ai, so a telco can check an outside firm's staff by number or QR code.
Questions people ask
Can the agent call a customer's references?
No. Contact with references should be a person's decision, limited to locating the customer, and never disclose the debt.
What if a payment was made but not yet confirmed?
The agent should hold any suspension until the ledger confirms or a person checks. Suspending a customer who paid is the fastest route to a complaint.
Do outside collection firms need the same training?
They need the shared vocabulary and the red lines. Firms whose staff release held items also need certified reviewers.
