AI agent training for compliance officers in retail banking in Brazil

How Brazilian retail bank compliance officers should train to oversee AI agents: Banco Central rules, LGPD reviews, Pix fraud and a 90-day plan.

Brazilian retail bank compliance officers need to learn to oversee AI agents that touch Pix, payroll-deductible credit and customer service, and to use one in their own monitoring. The key skills are reading depth, certificates and the verdict record, protecting customers' LGPD right to a review of automated decisions, and keeping findings and regulator contact human. Ninety days is enough.

What does a compliance officer at a Brazilian retail bank do?

The pace is relentless. Pix made instant payments part of everyday life for most Brazilians, and with it came new forms of fraud and social engineering. Compliance officers work with fraud and operations teams on the controls around Pix, on the handling of fraud claims and on the return of funds where the rules allow it. Anti-money laundering monitoring of fast-moving accounts runs alongside.

Credit conduct is the other big area. Payroll-deductible loans for public servants and retirees are widely sold, and unsolicited offers to retirees, pressure selling and unclear terms have been persistent concerns. Compliance checks how these loans are offered, by whom and to whom. Officers also oversee the bank's ombudsman office, which handles complaints that customer service did not resolve, and report to the board on compliance risk.

Which tasks can an AI agent take, and how far may it act?

Use Depth Compliance note
Sampling payroll loan sales for consent and disclosure evidence 1 Flags files where consent or the cost disclosure is missing
Reading Pix fraud claims and outcomes 1 Reports patterns by channel, amount and customer profile
Drafting board reports and responses to supervisory requests 2 An officer edits and signs
Logging confirmed findings in the compliance issues tracker 3 Within set bounds; the officer confirmed the finding first
Communications with Banco Central or the ANPD Held A named person releases

Officers must also oversee first-line agents. A customer service agent that answers Pix questions should never be able to promise a refund; a fraud agent that blocks accounts must hold its depth on evidence, not configuration. When either agent's certificate lapses after 90 days, or a run that clears no depth drops it to depth 1, compliance should see it immediately.

Which skills do compliance officers need, and which decisions remain theirs?

Reading the record is the first skill. Officers need to trace a held or refused verdict back to the bound that decided it and the facts behind it. In a Pix fraud claim, the bank's own transaction record is sealed; the receiving institution's response is signed by a named party; the customer's account of a phone scam is declared. Each deserves different weight. How compliance officers review an AI agent's decisions sets out a step-by-step approach, and AI agent skills by role the comparison with other roles. Which roles in retail banking need AI agent training shows where compliance sits.

The second skill is improving the agent. An officer who overrides a sampling flag on a payroll loan file should record why; that reason refines the agent's brief and reduces noise for every later file. Teaching compliance officers to bank corrections explains how.

What stays with people:

  • deciding that a sales practice breached the rules, and the remedy for affected customers
  • reviewing a decision when a customer exercises the right to a human review under LGPD
  • every communication with Banco Central, the CVM or the ANPD
  • suspicious transaction reporting decisions
  • approval of the depth any first-line agent may hold

This is why the compliance officer remains the real control, as set out in why compliance officers are the real control in an AI agent deployment.

Which Brazilian rules shape oversight and competence?

Banco Central do Brasil supervises banks and payment institutions, sets rules for Pix including its fraud and return mechanisms, and expects banks to run an effective compliance function, an ombudsman office and fair customer treatment. Where retail banks distribute investment products, the CVM's rules apply to that activity.

The LGPD, enforced by the ANPD, requires a legal basis for processing, transparency and security, and gives people the right to request a review of decisions taken solely on the basis of automated processing that affect their interests, such as a credit or fraud decision. A bank using an agent in those decisions must be able to explain the criteria and must have trained people ready to carry out the review. Consumer protection law adds duties of clear information and fair treatment. Brazil is debating a general AI law, but the obligations that apply now are these.

This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.

What does a 90-day training plan look like?

Days 1 to 30

Compliance, the ombudsman team and fraud risk complete the Foundations material in Portuguese. Each officer traces three decisions from a first-line agent, one of them a Pix fraud claim, through the record to the deciding bound.

Days 31 to 60

A monitoring agent goes live at depth 1 on payroll loan sales and Pix fraud claims. Officers compare its flags with their own sampling and log every disagreement with a reason. The ombudsman team practises LGPD review requests on real anonymised cases.

Days 61 to 90

Officers who release held items complete reviewer certification with a two-week practicum. The head of compliance signs an oversight register of agents, depths, certificate expiry dates and responsible officers. The training plan template for compliance officers turns the plan into individual commitments. Pryme Intelligence Academy's Operator track fits this stage, with module tests set in retail banking and compliance.

Questions people ask

Who carries out the LGPD review of an automated decision?

A trained person who can read the agent's record, understand the criteria applied and change the outcome if it was wrong. Make sure that person exists before the agent goes live.

Can a customer service agent promise a Pix refund?

No. It can explain the process and open the claim, but any refund decision should rest with the fraud team under the bank's rules.

How should compliance watch payroll loan sales?

Sample every channel, including correspondents, with special attention to retirees. An agent can read every file; officers judge the flagged ones and check a sample of unflagged ones too.
