AI agent training for compliance officers in retail banking in Saudi Arabia

How Saudi retail bank compliance officers should train to oversee AI agents: SAMA expectations, Sharia governance, data protection and a 90-day plan.

Compliance officers at Saudi retail banks need to oversee AI agents under SAMA's expectations, alongside Sharia governance and the Personal Data Protection Law. The training covers reading each agent's depth, certificate and verdict record, using an agent for monitoring, and keeping findings, Sharia questions and regulator contact with named people. A 90-day plan brings a compliance team to certified review.

What does a compliance officer at a Saudi retail bank do?

Saudi retail banking is largely Sharia-compliant. Personal finance, home finance and cards are structured as Islamic contracts, and each bank has a Sharia committee that approves products and rules on practice. Compliance works beside the Sharia function: checking that products are sold and administered as approved, that documentation follows the structure, and that customers understand what they sign.

The rest of the work follows SAMA's expectations: consumer protection, complaint handling, anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing, fraud prevention, cyber security, outsourcing and governance. Digital channels now carry most retail activity, and SAMA watches fraud and customer harm in those channels closely. Compliance officers spend more of their time on app and online channels than on branch files.

Which compliance tasks can an AI agent take on at a Saudi bank?

Product documentation checks, depth 1. The agent reads finance contracts and disclosure documents and checks them against the product as approved by the Sharia committee and the bank's disclosure requirements. Sharia committee rulings are among its sealed sources.

Digital channel monitoring, depth 1. The agent reads complaint data, fraud claims and app event logs and flags patterns, such as a step in the app where customers repeatedly misunderstand fees.

Reports and responses, depth 2. The agent drafts compliance reports, board papers and responses to SAMA information requests in Arabic and English. An officer reviews and signs.

Customer due diligence refresh, depth 3. Within bounds, the agent sends routine requests to refresh expired identification and records responses.

Notifications to SAMA, suspicious activity decisions and Sharia questions, held. The agent prepares the case; a named person decides.

Officers also oversee the first line's agents. A customer service agent explaining finance costs must hold a current certificate for that capability; if it lapses after 90 days or a run that clears no depth drops it to depth 1, compliance should know at once.

What must compliance officers learn, and what stays with them?

Officers need to read the reasoning behind any verdict: the minimum chain of role scope, certificate, sources, the bank's limits and the platform guardrails, with the lowest deciding. They need to read Attest results gate by gate and trace decisions through the record. For Saudi banks one point deserves emphasis: an agent's sources must include the Sharia committee's current rulings, and an officer should check that a superseded ruling has been removed. AI agent skills by role shows how they compare with other roles.

Officers should also improve agents through corrections. When an officer overrides a documentation flag, the reason belongs in the agent's brief, a habit described in teaching compliance officers to bank corrections.

What stays with people:

  • any question of Sharia compliance, which goes to the Sharia committee
  • decisions on suspicious activity reporting
  • every notification and response to SAMA
  • concluding that a customer was harmed and deciding on redress
  • approval of the depth any agent may hold

That concentration of judgement is why the role grows rather than disappears, as will AI agents replace compliance officers and why compliance officers are the real control both argue.

Which Saudi rules shape oversight and competence?

The Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) supervises banks and sets expectations on consumer protection, governance, outsourcing, cyber security, fraud and anti-money laundering. SAMA expects boards and senior management to oversee the technology and outsourced services the bank relies on, and to make sure the people running key processes are competent. An AI agent in a customer-facing or control process falls within that, and so does the training of the staff who oversee it. SAMA expectations and training staff who oversee AI agents goes into more detail.

The Personal Data Protection Law, overseen by SDAIA, sets rules on lawful processing, purpose, disclosure and data subject rights, with particular care for sensitive data and transfers outside the Kingdom. SDAIA has also published AI ethics principles that banks use as a reference for accountability and human oversight. Saudi Arabia has no single binding AI law for banks; these existing duties are the ones that apply. What AI agent training organisations in Saudi Arabia need gives the national picture.

What does a 90-day plan look like?

  1. Days 1 to 15. Compliance, the Sharia function's secretariat, fraud and internal audit complete the Foundations material, in Arabic or English.
  2. Days 16 to 35. Officers read each agent's certificate, depth and gate results, check its Sharia sources are current, and trace three decisions through the record.
  3. Days 36 to 60. A documentation and channel-monitoring agent goes live at depth 1. Officers log disagreements with reasons, reviewed weekly.
  4. Days 61 to 80. Officers with release duties complete reviewer training and a two-week practicum on live items.
  5. Days 81 to 90. The oversight register is approved by senior management: agents, depths, certificate expiry dates, Sharia source owners and responsible officers.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy offers the Foundations track free and the Operator track for officers who release held items, with module tests set in retail banking and compliance. Lessons can be read or listened to as audio. The head of compliance overseeing regulated, multi-agent deployments can take the Architect track, which ends in a board review with two Pryme assessors.

Questions people ask

Can an AI agent rule on whether a product is Sharia-compliant?

No. It can check documents against the committee's rulings, but any question of compliance goes to the Sharia committee.

How do we keep the agent's Sharia sources current?

Name an owner for those sources, and make loading a new ruling and removing the superseded one a single controlled step that compliance verifies.

Does SAMA require AI-specific training?

SAMA expects competent people overseeing key processes and technology. Training records tied to the agents in use are a clear way to show it.
