UK wealth management compliance officers need AI agent training that maps directly onto the Consumer Duty: how agents affect suitability, value, understanding and support, and how to evidence each outcome from the record. The skills are reading depth, certificates and verdicts, banking corrections, and keeping judgements with people accountable under SM&CR. A 90-day plan follows.
What does a UK wealth compliance officer spend time on?
The Consumer Duty frames the year. Firms must show good outcomes for retail clients across products and services, price and value, consumer understanding and consumer support, and the board must sign an annual assessment. Compliance gathers the evidence: suitability file reviews, fee and value analysis, testing of client communications, and monitoring of how clients with characteristics of vulnerability are treated.
Ongoing advice is a pressure point. Clients who pay an ongoing advice fee are entitled to the service it pays for, typically including a periodic review, and the FCA has scrutinised whether firms deliver it. Compliance checks that each fee-paying client received their review and that the fee represents fair value. With large client banks spread across many advisers, the checking is laborious, and it is where an agent helps first.
Where can an AI agent help, and at what depth?
Ongoing service delivery checks, depth 1. The agent reads the client bank, fee records and review records, and flags any fee-paying client with no completed review in the expected period. The fee ledger is sealed; an adviser's note that a review was done by phone is declared and needs a supporting record.
Suitability report testing, depth 1. The agent reads suitability reports and checks the client's objectives, risk profile, capacity for loss and the reasons for the recommendation. It flags gaps.
Consumer understanding tests, depth 1. The agent reads client communications and flags jargon, missing risk warnings or inconsistent figures for the officer to review.
Board Consumer Duty report drafts, depth 2. The agent assembles the evidence into a draft; an officer and the responsible senior manager review and sign.
Fee refunds, remediation and regulator contact, held. The agent proposes; a named person decides.
What must compliance officers learn, and what stays with them?
Officers need to read the agent's reasoning: the bound that decided each verdict, the agent's certified depth and the depth each action needs, and the source of each fact. They must know that depth is earned on the firm's own cases in Attest, that each of the seven gates clears on its own, that certificates lapse after 90 days, and that a run that clears no depth drops an agent to depth 1 the same day. How compliance officers review an AI agent's decisions describes a review routine that fits suitability files, and AI agent skills by role compares the skills across roles.
Officers should also check that advisers are improving the agents they use, not just working around them. If advisers keep rewriting the agent's suitability report drafts in the same way, that pattern should reach the agent's brief, as described in teaching wealth advisers to bank corrections. The rest of the firm's training needs are in which roles in wealth management need AI agent training.
What stays with people:
- concluding that advice was unsuitable or a fee did not represent fair value
- deciding on refunds and remediation
- judgements about a vulnerable client's treatment
- the board's Consumer Duty assessment
- every notification to the FCA or the ICO
Which UK rules shape oversight and competence?
The FCA supervises wealth managers and financial advisers. The Consumer Duty requires good outcomes for retail customers, and its cross-cutting rules expect firms to act in good faith, avoid foreseeable harm and support customers in pursuing their financial objectives. Suitability rules require advice to match each client's circumstances. The Senior Managers and Certification Regime makes named individuals accountable for their areas, and certified staff must be assessed as fit and proper each year, so competence to oversee agents is a personal concern for the senior manager and a certification question for advisers.
The ICO enforces UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Article 22 of UK GDPR restricts decisions based solely on automated processing with legal or similarly significant effects; UK GDPR Article 22 and AI agents covers what that means in practice. The UK takes a principles-based, regulator-led approach to AI rather than a single AI law, so these existing rules apply. Firms advising clients in the EU should also consider the EU AI Act's literacy duty, covered in EU AI Act Article 4 for wealth management.
This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.
What does a 90-day plan look like?
| Weeks | Focus | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Foundations for compliance, paraplanners and adviser team leads | Completion records, linked to certification files |
| 3 to 5 | Reading agents and tracing ten suitability decisions through the record | Trace notes with source classes |
| 6 to 8 | Ongoing service and suitability agents live at depth 1 | Disagreement log, reviewed weekly |
| 9 to 11 | Reviewer certification for officers who release held items | Practicum results |
| 12 to 13 | Oversight register and evidence pack for the Consumer Duty board report | Signed by the responsible senior manager |
Pryme Intelligence Academy's Operator track fits weeks 9 to 11, with module tests set in wealth management and compliance.
Questions people ask
Can the agent refund an ongoing advice fee?
It can calculate and propose the refund, but the decision should be held for a named person, since it concedes a service failure and affects the firm's remediation approach.
Does SM&CR require AI agent training?
Not by name. Senior managers must take reasonable steps in their areas, and certified staff must be fit and proper, which includes competence for the work they do with agents.
Is an ongoing service check a solely automated decision?
Not if a person reviews the flags and decides. Keep the decision with a person and the record will show it.
