AI agent training for fraud analysts in e-commerce in India

What Indian e-commerce fraud analysts must learn to oversee AI agents on COD, returns and UPI fraud, what stays human, the DPDP Act and a 90-day plan.

Indian e-commerce fraud analysts should be trained to work the queue of actions an AI agent holds for them: suspicious cash-on-delivery orders, return and refund claims, seller payouts and account blocks. The agent assembles evidence; analysts decide anything that blocks a customer or seller. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 and RBI rules shape the oversight.

What does an e-commerce fraud analyst in India handle?

Cash on delivery still accounts for a large share of orders, and with it comes a fraud pattern few other markets see at this scale: fake or prank orders that are refused at the door, orders placed to exploit return-to-origin costs, and courier-side collusion. Analysts watch refusal rates by pincode, by account and by device, and decide which customers lose the cash-on-delivery option.

Returns and refunds are the second strand: empty boxes, swapped products, used goods returned as new, and refund claims for items marked delivered. Prepaid orders paid by UPI and cards bring their own patterns, including account takeover and phishing that tricks customers into approving payment requests. On marketplaces, analysts also watch sellers: fake listings, self-purchases to inflate ratings, and sellers who ship counterfeit or nothing at all.

Where do AI agents fit into the fraud queue?

  • Cash-on-delivery risk scoring (depth 3). The agent removes the cash-on-delivery option for orders that match patterns the retailer has defined, such as repeated refusals from the same device. It never blocks the account.
  • Return claim packs (depth 2). The agent gathers the courier's pickup notes, photographs, weight records and the customer's history, and drafts a recommendation.
  • Refunds on contested returns (depth 4, held). The agent prepares the refund or rejection with evidence; an analyst releases or overturns it.
  • Seller payout holds (held). The agent proposes holding payouts to a seller with suspicious patterns; a named person decides.
  • Phishing pattern alerts (depth 3). The agent warns customers whose accounts show signs of a phishing attempt, using approved wording.

The skill that matters most is handling what the agent holds. Our guide on how fraud analysts handle an action an AI agent has held for them explains the steps, and AI agent skills by role gives the wider map.

What must analysts learn, and what stays with them?

Working the held queue. A held action carries the evidence, the proposed decision and the bound that held it. The analyst decides, and the decision is filed. Analysts should learn to check the evidence before the recommendation, not after.

Evidence classes. A courier's scanned weight at pickup is signed. A customer's photograph of a damaged item is declared. A message forwarded by a customer from someone claiming to be the retailer is external, and a common phishing tool.

Consistency. In large teams spread across cities, analysts must apply the same standard to return claims. Our guide on how to run calibration sessions for fraud analysts explains the format.

Logging practice. New analysts learn faster when they log their decisions on held items during a supervised fortnight; the practicum log template for fraud analysts gives the fields.

What stays with analysts: blocking customer and seller accounts, rejecting refunds on contested returns, holding seller payouts, reporting to police, and any decision about a customer who says they were defrauded. Our list of what fraud analysts should never let an AI agent do sets the boundary.

Which Indian rules shape oversight and literacy?

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 governs the digital personal data used in fraud checks: names, addresses, phone numbers, device data and order history. It requires notice and consent or a legitimate use, purpose limitation, reasonable security safeguards and breach notification, and it gives people rights to information about how their data is processed and to have grievances addressed. Analysts should be able to explain what data the agent used.

The RBI regulates banks and payment systems. Its rules restrict merchants from storing customers' full card details, which shapes what card data a fraud agent may see, and its framework on customer liability for unauthorised electronic transactions affects how payment disputes are resolved. Consumer protection rules for e-commerce require clear return and refund policies and grievance redress, so a rejected refund must rest on evidence the analyst can stand behind. SEBI and IRDAI are not normally relevant to retail fraud. India has no AI-specific law, and voluntary frameworks such as the NIST AI Risk Management Framework help structure governance.

This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.

What does a 90-day training plan look like?

Days 1 to 30. All analysts complete foundations training on governed agents. Run cash-on-delivery risk scoring in shadow and compare it with analysts' decisions.

Days 31 to 60. Certify cash-on-delivery scoring at depth 3. New analysts run a supervised fortnight on held return claims with logged decisions. Calibration sessions every week across sites.

Days 61 to 90. Senior analysts take operator certification ahead of the festive sale season, when return claims and cash-on-delivery refusals spike, and only they release held seller payout decisions. Record each analyst's status with the AI agent training plan template for fraud analysts.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy suits large, distributed fraud teams: lessons can be read or played as audio, labs run in a free Build workspace, and module tests are set in e-commerce fraud. Senior analysts take the Operator track, which ends in a two-week practicum signed off by a Pryme assessor. Certificates are checkable through VerifyDoc.ai by number or QR code.

Questions people ask

Can the agent block a customer after repeated cash-on-delivery refusals?

It can remove the cash-on-delivery option within your limits. Blocking the account is a stronger step that stays with an analyst.

How should analysts treat customer photographs of damaged goods?

As declared evidence. Weigh them against signed evidence such as the courier's pickup weight and inspection notes.

Does the agent need certification in regional languages?

If it reads or drafts in them, yes. Certify one language at a time on your own cases.
