AI agent training for fraud analysts in payments in France

How fraud analysts at French payment firms should train to oversee AI agents on instant payments and fake adviser scams, and what stays human.

Fraud analysts at French payment institutions and e-money issuers should be trained to supervise AI agents that triage instant payment alerts, check payee names and flag social engineering, and to decide every block, release and refund themselves. Withheld actions, such as reversing a settled payment, are not theirs to override either. The ACPR, CNIL, PSD2 and DORA shape oversight.

What does a payments fraud analyst in France work on?

Social engineering dominates. The "fake bank adviser" scam is well known in France: a fraudster calls a customer, spoofing the bank's number, claims there is fraud on the account and talks the victim into approving payments or adding a new beneficiary. Because the customer authenticates the payment themselves, strong authentication does not stop it. Analysts review alerts on unusual beneficiaries, first-time instant payments and changes to account limits, and call customers to check.

Instant credit transfers in euro raise the stakes, because money leaves in seconds and is quickly moved on through mule accounts. Analysts also handle card fraud for issuers, merchant fraud for acquirers, account opening fraud with stolen or synthetic identities, and recall requests from other institutions. Their decisions sit under close regulatory scrutiny.

Where do AI agents help a payments fraud team?

  • Alert triage (depth 2). The agent gathers account history, device, beneficiary and recent contact data for each alert and drafts a recommendation. The analyst decides.
  • Payee name mismatch handling (depth 3). Where the verification of payee check shows a mismatch, the agent warns the customer in approved wording and pauses the payment for confirmation.
  • New beneficiary cooling (depth 3). First payments to newly added beneficiaries above a limit set by the institution are held for a short delay and a confirmation call.
  • Recall request packs (depth 2). The agent assembles evidence for recalls sent to or received from other institutions.
  • Account blocks and fund releases (depth 4, held). The agent prepares the action; a named analyst decides.

Some actions are withheld at the platform floor for every agent at every depth, such as reversing a settled payment on the institution's own rail. Analysts should know the difference between a hold they can release and a withheld action they cannot. The wider picture is in AI agent skills by role.

What must analysts learn, and what stays with them?

Reading a hold. Start from the verdict and the bound that held the payment, then the payee check and the customer's recent calls, in the order set out in how fraud analysts review an AI agent's decisions.

Evidence classes. The verification of payee result is sealed. A customer's account of the phone call is declared. An email "from the bank" forwarded by the customer is external. A release decision should never rest on external evidence.

Talking to victims. A customer under the influence of a fake adviser may insist the payment is genuine. The agent can hold the payment; only a trained person can break the spell.

Corrections. When an analyst releases a payment the agent held, or holds one it allowed, the reason goes into the record; our guide on teaching fraud analysts to bank corrections shows how that reaches the agent's brief rather than staying in a case note.

What stays with analysts: blocking accounts, releasing held funds, refund decisions on disputed payments, suspicious transaction reporting decisions, and any contact with a customer in distress. Our piece on whether AI agents will replace fraud analysts explains why that keeps the role central, and why fraud analysts are the real control sets out the principle.

Which rules shape oversight and literacy in France?

The ACPR authorises and supervises payment institutions, e-money institutions and banks. PSD2 requires strong customer authentication for most electronic payments. The EU Instant Payments Regulation requires payment service providers to verify the payee's name before an instant credit transfer, which is why payee mismatches are a natural agent task. DORA, applying from 17 January 2025, sets ICT risk management, incident reporting, resilience testing and third-party risk duties that extend to agents connected to payment systems. Anti-money-laundering rules consistent with the FATF Recommendations require suspicious transaction reporting, and the EU AML Authority is being established in Frankfurt.

GDPR applies to customer data, and the CNIL is the French supervisory authority. Article 22 restricts decisions based solely on automated processing with significant effects, which covers an automatic account block. The EU AI Act applies directly: Article 4 requires AI literacy among staff, and fraud detection is carved out of its credit-scoring high-risk category.

What does a 90-day training plan look like?

Weeks 1 to 4. Foundations training for every analyst and call handler, recorded as Article 4 evidence. The agent triages instant payment alerts in shadow, alongside the analysts working them live.

Weeks 5 to 8. Certify payee mismatch handling at depth 3. Run new beneficiary cooling in shadow, reviewing every case it would have held. Train call handlers on fake-adviser conversations.

Weeks 9 to 13. Senior analysts complete operator certification and take sole release rights over held instant payments. The AI agent training plan template for fraud analysts records who is certified and when renewal falls due.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy gives French payment teams a free Foundations track and an Operator track for analysts who release held actions. People who lead regulated, multi-agent deployments can take the Architect track, which ends in a board review with two Pryme assessors. Certificates are issued through VerifyDoc.ai and checkable by any supervisor.

Questions people ask

Can the agent reverse an instant payment sent by mistake?

No. Reversing a settled payment is withheld at the platform floor. The agent can prepare a recall request for an analyst to send.

How should analysts handle a customer who insists a suspicious payment is genuine?

Keep the payment held, explain the scam pattern calmly, and escalate if needed. Record the conversation in the case.

Do call handlers need the same training as analysts?

They need foundations training and the scam-conversation module. Release rights should stay with certified analysts.
