UK payments fraud analysts should be trained to supervise AI agents that triage alerts on Faster Payments, interpret name-check results, assemble authorised push payment scam claims and link mule accounts, and to own every block, release and reimbursement decision. The PSR's reimbursement rules, the FCA's Consumer Duty and SM&CR make each decision both costly and accountable.
What does a payments fraud analyst in the UK work on?
Authorised push payment scams lead the caseload. Victims are persuaded to send money themselves: to a fake investment, a romance interest, a "safe account" set up by someone posing as the bank or police, or a fraudster who has hijacked a solicitor's or builder's email. Faster Payments settle in seconds, so prevention depends on spotting the scam before the customer presses send, and on talking to them when the system holds the payment.
When prevention fails, analysts handle reimbursement claims. Mandatory reimbursement for victims of authorised push payment scams, with the cost shared between the sending and receiving payment firms, means every claim is assessed against defined criteria and deadlines, and receiving firms have a strong incentive to find and close mule accounts. Card fraud, account takeover and first-party fraud continue alongside.
What changes when AI agents join the team?
- Payment interventions (depth 3). For payments matching scam patterns, the agent shows the customer a tailored warning and asks scam-specific questions before the payment proceeds.
- Alert triage (depth 2). The agent gathers account, device, payee, name-check and conversation data for each held payment and drafts a recommendation.
- Reimbursement claim files (depth 2). The agent assembles the timeline, warnings shown, customer answers and payee data against the reimbursement criteria. The analyst decides.
- Mule network cases (depth 2). For receiving firms, the agent links inbound scam payments to accounts and drafts a case.
- Payment releases, account blocks and reimbursements (depth 4, held). The agent prepares; a named analyst decides.
Reversing a settled payment on the firm's own rail is withheld at the platform floor for every agent. Repatriation runs through the inter-firm process instead. The full map is in AI agent skills by role.
What must analysts learn, and what stays with them?
Reviewing a held payment. The verdict, the bound that held it, the name-check result, what the customer was told and how they answered. Our guide on how fraud analysts review an AI agent's decisions sets out the order.
Evidence for reimbursement. The name-check result and the record of warnings shown are sealed. The customer's account of the scam is declared. A screenshot of messages with the fraudster is external but often central to understanding what happened. Analysts must weigh each fairly; a wrong refusal harms a victim and can breach the rules.
Vulnerability. Many scam victims are in vulnerable circumstances. Analysts should recognise it and adjust their approach, which Consumer Duty expects.
Corrections and logged practice. Overturned recommendations should carry reasons; see teaching fraud analysts to bank corrections. New analysts benefit from a fortnight of logged decisions on real held items, using the practicum log template for fraud analysts.
What stays with analysts: releasing held payments, reimbursement decisions, blocking accounts, closing mule accounts, suspicious activity reporting and every conversation with a victim. Our guide on what fraud analysts should learn before working with AI agents covers the groundwork.
Which UK rules shape oversight and competence?
The UK takes a principles-based, regulator-led approach to AI. The FCA regulates conduct, and its Consumer Duty requires firms to deliver good outcomes for retail customers, which reaches how warnings are written, how vulnerable customers are treated and how reimbursement claims are handled. The Senior Managers and Certification Regime assigns named accountability, so a senior manager answers for the fraud function's use of agents, and certified staff must be fit and proper for their roles. The PSR regulates payment systems and set the reimbursement requirement for authorised push payment scams. The PRA supervises banks prudentially, and its SS1/23 sets model risk management principles for banks that apply to fraud models used in decisions.
UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, regulated by the ICO, govern customer data. Article 22 restricts solely automated decisions with significant effects, such as automatic blocks. A name-checking service before payment helps customers spot mismatches. Anti-money-laundering duties follow the FATF Recommendations.

What does a 90-day training plan look like?
Days 1 to 30. All analysts complete foundations training and a session on vulnerability and Consumer Duty. Run alert triage in shadow.
Days 31 to 60. Certify payment interventions at depth 3 with conservative patterns. Run reimbursement claim files in shadow and compare every recommendation with the analyst's decision.
Days 61 to 90. Senior analysts complete operator certification. Release of held Faster Payments and reimbursement decisions are reserved to them, which gives the accountable senior manager a clear line of authority. The AI agent training plan template for fraud analysts records it.
Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy gives UK payment firms a documented training route that sits well with SM&CR: a free Foundations badge for all staff and the Operator certificate for analysts who decide held actions. Certificates are issued through VerifyDoc.ai, valid 12 months, and listed on a public register, so a senior manager can show who was qualified on any date.
Questions people ask
Can the agent decide a reimbursement claim?
It prepares the file against the criteria. The decision stays with an analyst, because it involves judgement about the customer's circumstances and conduct.
Do warnings written by the agent satisfy Consumer Duty?
Only if they help customers understand the risk. Approved templates, tested on real cases, are safer than free-form drafting.
Who is accountable if the agent releases a scam payment?
The firm, and under SM&CR the senior manager responsible for the function. That is why release of held payments stays with certified people.
