AI agent training for fraud analysts in retail banking in Brazil

How fraud analysts at Brazilian retail banks should train to oversee AI agents on Pix scams and mule accounts, what stays human, and the rules.

Fraud analysts at Brazilian retail banks should be trained to supervise AI agents that triage Pix alerts, start the special return mechanism, detect mule accounts and assemble card fraud cases, with clear authority limits and reviewer cover around the clock. Blocks, returns and reimbursements stay with people. Banco Central do Brasil's Pix rules and the LGPD shape oversight.

What does a retail bank fraud analyst in Brazil handle?

Pix changed the job. Instant, free for individuals and available at any hour, it is central to everyday payments, and fraudsters follow it. The common scams are social engineering: fake bank employees calling to "protect" an account, relatives in trouble asking for money by messaging app, fake sellers, and fake payment slips. Phone theft is another strand, where a phone snatched while in use gives access to banking apps and Pix transfers.

Analysts at retail banks review Pix alerts, contact customers, process fraud reports through the special return mechanism, and handle disputes. Mule accounts, often opened with stolen identity documents or rented from real customers, receive and spread the proceeds quickly. Card fraud, account opening fraud and fraudulent loans taken in victims' names complete the picture.

Where can AI agents take on part of the work?

  • Pix alert triage (depth 2). The agent gathers device, location, beneficiary and history data for each alert and drafts a recommendation.
  • Night and new-device limits (depth 3). The agent applies the bank's own lower limits for Pix at night and from new devices, and asks for extra authentication where they are exceeded.
  • Special return requests (depth 3). When a customer reports a Pix scam, the agent opens the return request with the receiving institution within the bank's process, and records it.
  • Mule account detection (depth 2). The agent links accounts receiving funds from reported scams and drafts a case.
  • Account blocks and reimbursements (depth 4, held). The agent prepares; a named analyst decides.

For how other bank roles change, see AI agent skills by role. Analysts new to agents should begin with what fraud analysts should learn before working with AI agents.

What must analysts learn, and what stays with them?

Authority by level. Junior analysts might release Pix alerts under a set value; account blocks and reimbursements need seniors. Our approver authority matrix for the fraud team shows how to lay this out.

Round-the-clock cover. Pix runs at every hour, and scams peak at night and weekends. Held payments and return requests need a certified reviewer on duty. See how to build a reviewer rota for the fraud team.

Evidence classes. The Pix transaction record is sealed. A customer's police report is signed by a public authority. A customer's account of the call is declared. A screenshot of a message from a "relative" is external.

Return mechanism timing. Analysts must know that speed matters: funds that are still in the receiving account can be blocked and returned, and funds that have moved on are much harder to recover.

What stays with analysts: blocking accounts, reimbursements, closing mule accounts, cancelling fraudulent loans, suspicious activity reporting and contact with victims. The role grows in judgement; our piece on whether AI agents will replace fraud analysts explains why, and why fraud analysts are the real control sets out the principle.

Which Brazilian rules shape oversight and literacy?

Banco Central do Brasil regulates banks and runs Pix. Its Pix rules include the special return mechanism for blocking and returning funds in fraud cases, marking of suspected fraud in a shared database, limits for night-time transfers and for new devices, and duties on institutions to manage fraud risk. It also sets rules on operational and cyber risk management that reach agents connected to banking systems. CVM and SUSEP regulate securities and insurance and are not normally relevant to retail fraud.

The LGPD governs customer data used in fraud checks, enforced by the ANPD. Fraud prevention can support processing, but purpose limitation, necessity and security still apply, and customers can request review of decisions made solely on automated processing that affect their interests, such as an automatic block. Anti-money-laundering duties follow the FATF Recommendations. Brazil does not have an AI act in force; model risk is supervised in banking, and voluntary frameworks such as ISO/IEC 42001 help structure governance.

What does a 90-day training plan look like?

Weeks 1 to 4. Foundations training for every analyst on every shift, nights included. Pix alert triage runs in shadow.

Weeks 5 to 8. Certify night and new-device limits at depth 3. Set the approver matrix and the reviewer rota with night and weekend cover. Run return requests in shadow and compare timings with analysts.

Weeks 9 to 13. Certify return requests at depth 3. Senior analysts complete operator certification and become the only people who approve blocks and reimbursements.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy gives Brazilian bank fraud teams a free Foundations track and the Operator track for approvers, with module tests set in retail banking fraud. Team leads running several agents across Pix, cards and onboarding can take the Architect track, valid 24 months. Certificates are issued through VerifyDoc.ai and checkable by number or QR code.

Questions people ask

Can the agent open a return request without an analyst?

Within the bank's process and once certified, yes, because speed matters and the request can be withdrawn. Blocking the customer's own account stays held.

How should analysts treat a stolen-phone case?

As account takeover. The agent can lock the app and pause Pix on report; reimbursement and investigation stay with analysts.

Who decides whether to reimburse a scam victim?

An analyst, under the bank's policy. The agent prepares the evidence and shows the bound that held the decision.
