AI agent training for internal auditors in insurance in India

What internal auditors at Indian insurers must learn to audit and use AI agents, what stays with them, how IRDAI and the DPDP Act apply, and a 90-day plan.

Cashless health claims, distributor commissions and grievance replies are where Indian insurers' internal auditors will meet AI agents first. Auditors need training to read the decision record, check certificate currency and test provenance. Audit judgement and finding ratings stay with them. IRDAI and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 frame oversight.

What fills the audit plan at an Indian insurer?

Distribution and claims dominate. Policies are sold through individual agents, corporate agents, banks and online platforms, and commission flows are complex enough that errors and inducements are a standing audit theme. Mis-selling, especially of long-term savings products sold as something else, is tested through call recordings, proposal forms and free-look cancellations.

On the health side, much of the claims volume moves through third-party administrators and a cashless network of hospitals. Auditors test pre-authorisations, final bills against package rates, and the timeliness of settlement. Grievance handling is audited against the timelines IRDAI expects, and the board's audit committee wants assurance that complaints are not being closed without a fair answer.

What changes when agents arrive?

Insurers are putting agents into exactly these high-volume flows, and each one becomes something audit must test. The common uses and their depths:

  • Cashless pre-authorisation review (depth 2). The agent checks the hospital's request against policy terms and the package rate and drafts an approval or query. A medical officer decides.
  • Commission computation checks (depth 1). It recomputes commission for each policy against the distributor agreement and flags differences.
  • Grievance reply drafting (depth 2). It drafts the reply in the customer's language. A grievance officer sends it.
  • Proposal form consistency checks (depth 1). It compares declared income, age and existing cover with the product sold and flags possible mis-selling.

Audit can use agents too: depth 1 to test the full population of commission payments or pre-authorisations, and depth 2 to draft workpapers. Our guide on how internal auditors review an AI agent's decisions explains how to sample the record.

What must auditors learn, and what stays with them?

Language is a real issue in India. A grievance reply drafted in Hindi, Tamil or Marathi has to be audited in that language, or at least against a faithful rendering. Auditors should know that the record keeps exactly what the agent drafted and sent, and plan their testing so someone who reads the language reviews a sample.

Provenance matters most in cashless claims. A hospital's request and its attached bills arrive from outside, so they are external evidence. The policy schedule and the package rate list are sealed. An auditor should test that no pre-authorisation above the insurer's routine limit was approved on external evidence alone, and that held approvals went to a medical officer with authority.

Certification is the third skill. Depth is earned on the insurer's own past cases through Attest, and certificates lapse after 90 days; a run that clears no depth drops the agent to depth 1 the same day. Auditors should test the certificate history against the dates of the verdicts they sample. Pryme Intelligence Academy teaches this in its Foundations track, which is free and takes about four hours.

What stays with the auditor: the audit opinion, finding ratings, deciding the plan, and reporting to the audit committee. Our piece on whether AI agents will replace internal auditors sets out why judgement and independence stay human.

Which Indian rules shape oversight and literacy?

IRDAI regulates insurers and intermediaries. Its governance expectations require an independent internal audit function reporting to the board's audit committee, and its rules on outsourcing, cyber security, policyholder protection and grievance handling all reach agent deployments in substance. When an agent drafts grievance replies or checks claims, it sits inside processes IRDAI already supervises, and the insurer stays accountable for the outcome.

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 governs digital personal data, including health and financial details in claims and proposals. It requires a lawful purpose, notice to the individual, reasonable security safeguards and limits on retention. Auditors should test that the agent's access is scoped to the purpose and that the insurer can answer a data principal's request about how their data was processed.

For life insurers, AML obligations shaped by the FATF Recommendations apply to certain products, and agents that screen proposals must be tested for that purpose too. Cross-border standards such as ISO/IEC 42001 and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework give a structure for an AI audit programme.

This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.

How should an audit team train over 90 days?

Days 1 to 30. Everyone in audit learns the basic vocabulary: depth, the five bounds, the four verdicts, certification and the record. The chief audit executive adds every agent deployment to the audit universe with its certified capabilities.

Days 31 to 60. A small team audits one deployment, for example cashless pre-authorisation. They test full populations from the record, certificate currency on each date, approver authority and provenance. A second pair uses an audit agent at depth 1 on commission testing and compares its results with manual work.

Days 61 to 90. Write the agent audit programme, agree how findings on agents are rated, and decide which reviewers in the business need deeper operator-level training. Our training plan template for internal auditors and our guide to banking corrections cover the detail.

Questions people ask

Can an agent approve a cashless claim?

Within a routine limit and with a current certificate at depth 3, an insurer could allow it. Most start at depth 2, with a medical officer deciding, and audit should test which it is.

Should audit sample or test full populations?

With the record available, full-population tests on key attributes are possible and often better. Sampling still makes sense for judgement-heavy items such as grievance quality.

Why does audit matter more once agents act?

Because agents make many more decisions than people can watch, and audit is the function that tests whether the bounds and approvals held. Our piece on why internal auditors are the real control makes the case, and the guide to AI agent skills by role covers the others.
