Brazil's consumer lenders can use agents to verify income, check payroll-deduction margins and draft credit decisions, but loan officers must learn to review those drafts and recognise when an agent should hold. Disbursement by Pix is instant and hard to reverse, so it stays with a person. Officers also keep declines, exceptions and every over-indebtedness judgement.
What does a consumer loan officer in Brazil spend time on?
A large share of the work is payroll-deductible lending, where repayments are taken from a salary or pension before it reaches the borrower. The officer checks the borrower's available margin, confirms the employer or paying body's agreement, and makes sure the instalment fits within the legal limit on how much of income can be committed this way.
The rest is personal loans, credit card limit decisions and renegotiations. Over-indebtedness is a live concern: rules require lenders to assess affordability responsibly and to offer workable renegotiation to borrowers who cannot pay. Officers spend real time on those conversations.
Fraud is the third strand. Retirees and pensioners are targeted with loans they did not ask for, sometimes arranged through intermediaries. Officers watch for applications that come through unusual channels or where the borrower seems unaware of the terms.
Where can an agent take on work?
Margin and income checks at depth 1. The agent reads payroll or pension data and the credit bureau record and calculates available margin. Payroll data from the paying body is signed; a payslip uploaded by the borrower is declared.
Credit decision drafts at depth 2. The agent drafts the recommendation, the terms and the reasons. A loan officer approves or rejects it.
Renegotiation proposals at depth 2. For a borrower in difficulty, the agent drafts a plan that fits their income. The officer reviews and agrees it with the borrower.
Routine document requests at depth 3. The agent asks for missing documents within bounds the lender sets, in plain Portuguese, and records the request.
Disbursement at depth 4. Sending money by Pix is instant and hard to reverse, so it is held for a named officer. Reversing a settled payment is withheld at the platform floor for every agent at every depth.
Each verdict names the bound that decided, and every one is filed in an append-only record.
Why must the loan officer stay in the decision?
Because the decision has consequences only a person can answer for. A borrower declined, or approved for a loan they cannot repay, is harmed either way. An agent can draft the reasoning; the lender must be able to show a trained officer agreed with it. The case is set out in why loan officers are the real control in an AI agent deployment.
What stays with the officer: declines and the reasons given; any exception to the credit policy; judgements about over-indebtedness and the renegotiation offered; suspicion of fraud, especially against older borrowers; and disbursement. More red lines are in what loan officers should never let an AI agent do.
What should loan officers learn?
Reading a verdict. Allowed, held, refused or withheld, and which of the five bounds decided it: role scope, the agent's certificate, sources, the lender's own limits or the platform guardrails.
Reviewing a draft. Approving a held credit decision means checking the margin calculation, the reasons and the borrower's situation, not just the outcome. The method is in how loan officers review an AI agent's decisions.
Spotting pressure. An intermediary pushing for fast approval on a pensioner's loan is a warning sign. If the agent holds such a case, it is working correctly.
Correcting well. A rejected draft with a written reason improves the agent's brief and sources; see teaching loan officers to bank corrections.
Understanding certification. The agent is certified on the lender's own past applications; that certificate lapses after 90 days, and a run that clears no depth drops the agent to depth 1 the same day.
Which Brazilian rules shape oversight?
Banco Central do Brasil supervises banks and other credit institutions and expects them to govern risk, including the risk of systems that make or support credit decisions. Its rules on how financial institutions treat customers also reach how an agent communicates with borrowers.
The LGPD governs the personal data used in credit decisions, and the ANPD enforces it. The LGPD gives people the right to request a review of decisions made solely on the basis of automated processing that affect their interests, which is a strong reason to keep a trained officer in every decline.
Brazil's consumer protection and over-indebtedness rules require clear information, responsible lending and access to renegotiation. Payroll-deductible lending has its own limits on how much income can be committed. Pix is the instant payment system that makes disbursement fast and, for practical purposes, final.

What does a 90-day plan look like?
- Days 1 to 30. All loan officers, team leads and the credit risk owner take Foundations (about 4 hours). Run the free readiness assessment for the team. The agent calculates margins at depth 1 alongside officers.
- Days 31 to 60. Officers complete the Operator modules on how a governed agent decides, human review, teaching the agent and when something goes wrong. Credit decision drafts move to depth 2. Leads review every decline the agent drafted.
- Days 61 to 90. Officers sit the Operator exam (40 questions in 60 minutes; 32 correct to pass) and complete a two-week practicum on live applications. Only certified officers approve held decisions and disbursements.
A copyable version is the training plan template for loan officers. The roles around the officer are mapped in AI agent skills by role.
Questions people ask
Can an agent approve a payroll-deductible loan on its own?
Once certified at depth 3 on the lender's own cases, it could approve routine applications within tight bounds. Disbursement by Pix remains depth 4 and is held for a person.
How should officers handle a pensioner who seems unaware of a loan?
Stop and verify directly with the borrower through a known contact. The agent should hold any such case, and the officer should treat intermediary pressure as a warning sign.
Do correspondents and intermediaries need training?
They should understand why applications are held and what the agent checks. Approval rights belong to the lender's certified officers.
