AI agent training for risk managers in insurance in Nigeria

Risk managers at Nigerian insurers need training on agent depth, premium checks, NAICOM expectations and the NDPA 2023, with a 90-day training plan.

A Nigerian insurance risk manager supervising AI agents should be trained to check what the agent trusts, how far it may act, and who approves what it holds. In practice that means premium receipt confirmed from the bank record before cover is confirmed, claims payouts held for named approvers, and NDPA 2023 discipline. Risk acceptance and NAICOM reporting stay human.

What does the risk function do in a Nigerian insurer?

Nigerian insurers write motor, group life for employers, fire and special perils, marine and a growing retail book sold through digital channels and bank partners. Cover generally depends on premium being received before the risk attaches, so the link between payment and policy is a control, not an administrative detail. Brokers place much of the corporate business, and their documents and remittances need checking.

The second line maintains the risk register, oversees underwriting authorities and claims leakage, monitors brokers and agents, runs fraud and AML checks on life business, and reports to the board and to NAICOM. A lot of evidence still arrives as scanned documents, transfer screenshots and email chains, which is exactly where an agent can either help or hurt.

Where do agents help the risk manager?

Five uses come up repeatedly:

  • Premium-to-policy matching, depth 1 to 3. The agent matches premiums in the bank feed to policies and confirms cover only when the bank record shows the money. A transfer screenshot from a customer or broker is external evidence and cannot confirm cover. Mismatches are held.
  • Broker remittance monitoring, depth 1. The agent tracks premiums brokers have collected but not remitted and drafts the ageing report.
  • Claims leakage review, depth 2. For settled claims, the agent compares payouts with policy limits, deductibles and repair estimates and drafts findings for a person to confirm.
  • Loss event capture, depth 2. Incidents from operations, IT and finance drafted into the register with cause and amount.
  • Regulatory return preparation, depth 2. The agent assembles data for periodic returns from sealed sources, with every figure traced to its system. A person signs off.

Claims payments and premium refunds are depth 4. Above the insurer's own limits, both are refused: the agent may only draft them, and a named approver makes the payment.

What must risk managers learn, and what stays with them?

The first skill is provenance. The Pryme Context Protocol stamps every fact reaching an agent with where it came from: sealed from the system of record, signed by a named party, declared by a person, or external. A risk manager who understands those classes can see why the agent refused to confirm cover on a screenshot and why that refusal is the control working.

The second is reading the minimum chain. When an action is held, the verdict names the bound that decided it. That tells the risk manager whether the issue is the insurer's own limit, a lapsed certificate or a missing source.

The third is correcting in a way that lasts. If the agent keeps holding group life claims because the employer's member schedule is out of date, the fix is a source change, not a series of manual approvals. Our guide to teaching risk managers to bank corrections covers this.

What stays with people:

  • risk appetite and the acceptance of residual risk;
  • conclusions that a claim or broker conduct is fraudulent;
  • suspicious transaction reports on life business;
  • what is reported to the board and to NAICOM.

The full list of limits is in what risk managers should never let an AI agent do.

Which Nigerian rules shape oversight and competence?

NAICOM supervises insurers and brokers and expects sound corporate governance, risk management and fair treatment of policyholders. Agents that confirm cover, settle claims or prepare returns sit inside that control environment, and the risk function should be able to show who supervises them and how those people are qualified.

The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 governs policyholder data, including health information collected for life and medical cover, which needs stronger protection. It requires a lawful basis, purpose limits, security and respect for data subjects' rights, including rights around automated decisions. The Nigeria Data Protection Commission enforces it.

Insurers selling through banks will meet the Central Bank of Nigeria's expectations through those partners. For life and investment-linked products, the FATF Recommendations set the international standard for customer due diligence and suspicious transaction reporting, and the agent's role is to surface, not to conclude.

This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.

How should a Nigerian insurer train risk managers over 90 days?

  1. Weeks 1 to 2. Foundations for the risk team, underwriting and claims heads. Everyone learns depth, verdicts and provenance.
  2. Weeks 3 to 5. Inventory every agent and certificate. Replay a quarter of premium receipts and claims at depth 1 and list every case where a screenshot had been accepted as payment.
  3. Weeks 6 to 8. Write the insurer's own limits, including the cover-confirmation rule and payout limits. Approvers sit the operator exam.
  4. Weeks 9 to 10. Two-week practicum of logged review decisions on live work.
  5. Weeks 11 to 12. Calibration on broker remittance cases; board paper showing agents, depth, approvers and certificate lapse dates.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy offers a free readiness assessment for teams of up to 25 people. A Nigerian insurer's risk and claims team takes the Foundations test set in insurance, and the report shows scores by concept, the gaps, and the first agent to start with. Approvers then take the Operator track, with a practicum signed off by a Pryme assessor.

Questions people ask

Can the agent confirm cover if the broker vouches for payment?

A broker's confirmation is signed evidence, stronger than a screenshot, but cover should follow the insurer's own rule. If that rule requires receipt in the insurer's account, the agent holds until the bank record shows it.

Who decides whether an agent's depth goes up?

The evidence from certification sets the depth, capped by the role's ceiling. The risk function reviews the evidence and can keep the insurer's own limits tighter than the certificate allows.

Does takaful business need separate treatment?

Its product rules differ, so the agent's sources and bounds must reflect them. The oversight principles, held actions and the record, are the same.
