AI agent training for underwriters in insurance in Brazil

Brazilian insurance underwriters need training to supervise AI agents on motor inspections, rural risks and broker quotes under SUSEP and the LGPD.

Brazilian insurance underwriters need training to supervise agents across motor, rural and life business: checking pre-inspection evidence, pricing within guidelines and preparing broker quotes, while acceptance outside appetite and declines stay with them. The core skills are reading provenance and banking corrections. SUSEP's supervision and the LGPD's non-discrimination principle and review rights frame the work.

What does an insurance underwriter in Brazil handle?

Motor insurance is the largest personal line, and theft and robbery risk varies sharply by vehicle model, region and even postal code. New policies often require a prior vehicle inspection, with photographs and a checklist, before cover starts. Rural insurance covers crops and livestock against drought, frost and excess rain, often supported by public premium subsidy programmes, and depends on agronomic data and planting dates.

Almost all business arrives through brokers, who expect fast quotes and clear reasons when terms change. Life and credit life policies sold through banks add volume and conduct sensitivity. Underwriters accept, price, refer and decline, write up exceptions, and keep the portfolio inside the insurer's appetite.

Where do agents help, and how far may they act?

  1. Vehicle inspection review, depth 2. The agent checks the inspection photographs and checklist for completeness, compares the chassis and plate details with the national vehicle record, and flags damage or inconsistencies. Photographs supplied by the broker or customer are declared; the vehicle record is signed by its issuer.
  2. Motor pricing within guidelines, depth 2 to 3. For standard risks, the agent rates the policy from the insurer's tariff and, where the insurer allows it, issues quotes directly at depth 3. Vehicles or regions outside the tariff's normal range are held.
  3. Rural risk assessment, depth 1 to 2. The agent reads the planting plan, the property's history and climate data and drafts the underwriting note. Underwriters decide.
  4. Broker quote replies, depth 2. The agent drafts the quote and explanation for the broker. A person approves anything with non-standard terms.
  5. Policy issuance and endorsements that widen cover, depth 4. Held for an underwriter with authority, because they commit the insurer.

What must underwriters learn, and what stays with them?

The essential skill is correcting the agent in a way that sticks. If underwriters keep overriding the motor agent because it rates a vehicle model with a recent theft pattern at the standard tariff, the correction should state the rule and the source, so the agent's sources and bounds change. Teaching underwriters to bank corrections sets out the method. A correction that only fixes one quote leaves the next hundred exposed.

Underwriters also need to watch for proxies. Pricing on location can produce outcomes that track characteristics the insurer must not use. The record of what the agent priced, and why, lets underwriters test for that.

Underwriters keep:

  • acceptance outside appetite and declines;
  • rural risks with unusual crops, regions or planting dates;
  • non-standard terms negotiated with brokers;
  • conclusions on inspection fraud.

The role changes shape but remains, as will AI agents replace underwriters explains, and why underwriters are the real control makes the case for investing in them.

Which Brazilian rules shape oversight and competence?

SUSEP supervises insurers and brokers and expects sound governance, internal controls, risk management and fair treatment of policyholders. Agents that price, accept or issue policies are part of that control environment, and the insurer should be able to show SUSEP which agents act, at what depth, and who oversees them.

The LGPD, enforced by the ANPD, governs personal data in proposals and inspections. Its principles include purpose, necessity, transparency and non-discrimination, which forbids processing for unlawful or abusive discriminatory purposes. Health data in life underwriting is sensitive and needs stronger protection. Individuals can request review of decisions taken solely on automated processing that affect their interests and can ask for information about the criteria used; an agent that declines or surcharges a proposal on its own would trigger both.

Banco Central do Brasil supervises the banks that distribute life and credit life policies, so conduct issues in bancassurance can involve both regulators. If your group writes EU business, check whether the EU AI Act, which lists life and health insurance risk assessment and pricing as high-risk, applies.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy sets module tests in the learner's own industry and role, so motor and rural underwriters are tested on their own kinds of cases. Underwriters who approve held issuance take the Operator track; those who design and certify underwriting agents can take the Builder track, whose capstone is an agent certified in Attest to depth 2 or higher.

Questions people ask

Can the agent accept a motor proposal without inspection?

Only where the insurer's own rules waive inspection, such as for new vehicles, and the agent's sources reflect that. Otherwise the proposal waits for a completed inspection.

How do we test for discriminatory outcomes?

Use the record to compare prices and declines across regions and customer groups, and investigate gaps the tariff does not explain. Underwriters and actuaries decide what to change.

Should brokers know when a quote came from an agent?

Transparency helps, and brokers will ask who to call about terms. Make clear that a named underwriter is accountable for every quote.
