AI agents for compliance teams in insurance in India

How Indian insurers' compliance teams can use AI agents to spot mis-selling, check sales calls and track grievances, under IRDAI and the DPDP Act 2023.

Indian insurers' compliance teams can use AI agents to spot mis-selling through free-look cancellations and early lapses, check recorded sales calls in several languages for required disclosures, monitor bancassurance and agency channels, and track grievances against deadlines. IRDAI holds insurers accountable for how products are sold, so findings, channel action and refunds stay with people.

What do insurance compliance teams in India spend their time on?

Indian life and general insurers sell through a wide network: individual agents, corporate agents including banks, brokers, web aggregators and digital channels. IRDAI regulates insurers and intermediaries, and mis-selling is a persistent supervisory concern. Compliance teams spend much of their time checking how policies were sold.

Sales conduct. Policies must suit the customer, and key features, charges and exclusions must be disclosed. Many insurers record or verify sales by phone before issuing a policy. Those calls happen in many languages.

Early signals of mis-selling. Policyholders can return a policy within a free-look period after receipt. High free-look cancellations, early lapses or complaints on a channel point to a sales problem.

Bancassurance. Banks selling insurance to their own customers create particular risk: customers may believe a policy is a deposit or a condition of a loan. Both IRDAI and RBI rules bear on this.

Grievances. Complaints must be acknowledged and resolved within set timelines, and customers can escalate to the insurance ombudsman or the regulator's grievance channel.

Personal data. Proposal forms, medical reports and claims records are personal data under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023.

Where can AI agents help?

Depth caps what an agent may do: 1 reads, 2 drafts for a person, 3 executes routine work within bounds.

Channel mis-selling indicators (depth 1). The agent reads free-look cancellations, early lapses, surrenders and complaints by channel, branch and individual seller, and reports outliers with the evidence for each.

Sales call checks (depth 1). For recorded pre-issuance calls, the agent checks that required disclosures were made and the customer's answers match the proposal form. It works across the languages the insurer sells in and flags calls for review. This is the most India-specific use: the volume and the number of languages make full manual review impossible.

Bancassurance monitoring (depth 1). The agent links policy sales to the bank's loan disbursements and flags policies sold within a short period of a loan, which can indicate bundling.

Grievance tracking (depth 3). The agent tracks every grievance against its timeline and sends routine reminders to owners. It does not resolve or close any grievance.

Regulatory change notes (depth 2). The agent reads new IRDAI circulars and drafts impact notes for product, distribution and claims teams.

What stays with people, and why?

Finding that a sale was mis-sold. A flagged call or an outlier branch is evidence, not a finding. Deciding that a policy was mis-sold, and refunding or restructuring it, is a judgement with financial effect.

Action against intermediaries. Suspending an agent, a branch or a corporate agent partnership affects livelihoods and commercial relationships, and must rest on evidence a person has weighed.

Underwriting and pricing. A compliance agent does not take part in them. Whether any agent should underwrite or price is covered in can an AI agent underwrite an insurance policy and can an AI agent set insurance premiums.

Grievance outcomes. Whether a complaint is upheld and what the customer receives stays with a person, as does every response to the ombudsman or IRDAI.

Breach decisions. Whether a data breach must be notified under the DPDP Act stays with the data protection lead.

Which rules apply in India?

India has no AI-specific law in force. Agents are governed by sector regulation and the DPDP Act. See how AI agents are regulated in India.

IRDAI regulates insurers and intermediaries, including rules on product disclosure, sales conduct, policyholder protection, grievance redressal and outsourcing. Insurers remain responsible for outsourced activities and for systems used in sales and service. An agent that checks sales or drafts customer letters sits within that responsibility.

RBI regulates banks, including their conduct when distributing third-party products such as insurance. Bancassurance monitoring touches both sets of rules.

Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023. Sets duties for processing digital personal data: notice and consent or another permitted ground, purpose limitation, security safeguards, breach notification and individuals' rights. Call recordings, proposal forms and medical reports all fall within it. An agent processing them does so under the insurer's responsibility. For detail, see DPDP Act and AI agents in India.

Cross-border. If the agent's processing happens outside India, check how the Act and any sector rules apply to transfers. Group insurers with EU operations will also meet the EU AI Act for those operations.

This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.

How do you start in the first 90 days?

Month one. Start with channel mis-selling indicators. They use data the insurer already holds and produce a report rather than a customer action. Confirm with the data protection lead that the purpose fits the Act.

Month two. Replay the agent against the past four quarters. Check whether the branches and sellers it flags match those your team later investigated, and look for any it missed.

Month three. Pilot sales call checks in two languages, with reviewers fluent in each checking every flagged call and a sample of passed ones. Payment firms in India face a different regulator and risk set; see compliance agents in Indian payments.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme certifies each agent separately, so the call-check agent is replayed through Attest per language on your own recordings and can hold depth 1 in one language before another. Refund or channel action is outside its role scope and refused. Every verdict is filed, giving IRDAI a reconstructable record. The guide to AI compliance agents explains the second-line approach.

Questions people ask

Can an AI agent cancel a mis-sold policy?

No. Cancelling or refunding a policy changes the customer's cover and the insurer's liabilities. The agent flags the evidence; a person decides and acts.

Is it reliable to check sales calls in regional languages?

Reliability differs by language, which is why each language should be tested separately on your own calls before the agent is relied on. Keep human review for flagged calls in every language.

Do customers need to be told an agent reviews their sales call?

Your privacy notice should describe how call recordings are processed. Update it before the agent starts, consistent with the DPDP Act's notice requirements.

Decide what your agents may do. Prove it. Enforce it.

Pryme Intelligence certifies each agent on your own cases, checks every action against five bounds at the moment it happens, and files every verdict.
