Politically exposed clients are the defining risk for Nigerian wealth compliance teams, followed by fortunes built on government contracts and property, and dollar investments funded through domiciliary accounts. AI agents can map client connections, trace funding and draft MLRO reporting. People decide acceptance and reports. SEC Nigeria, the CBN and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 apply.
What do wealth compliance teams in Nigeria spend their time on?
Politically exposed persons dominate the risk profile. Wealthy Nigerians are often current or former public officials, their relatives or close associates, and the FATF standard calls for enhanced due diligence on them: senior approval, source of wealth and funds established, and ongoing monitoring. Identifying who counts, including relatives and business partners, is detailed work.
Source of wealth is the second load. Fortunes are frequently built on government contracts, oil and gas services, property and trading businesses that deal largely in cash. Evidence can be thin, records may be held by companies the client controls, and property titles may be hard to verify.
Third, foreign currency. Clients invest in dollar funds and Eurobonds through domiciliary accounts, and many diaspora clients send money home to invest. Compliance must check that funds moved through proper channels and that the documentation fits the bank's and fund manager's obligations.
Where can AI agents help?
- Connection mapping (depth 1). The agent reads the client's declared relationships, company registry extracts and the firm's screening results, and maps links to public officials, including directorships shared with politically exposed persons. It cites every source and marks which links are confirmed and which are inferred.
- Source of wealth assessment (depth 2). The agent compares the client's declared source of wealth with contract awards, company accounts and property documents provided, and drafts an assessment that lists what is evidenced and what is not. Our answer on whether an AI agent can verify source of funds and source of wealth explains the limits.
- Funding trail checks (depth 1). For each subscription to a dollar fund, the agent traces the payment to its source account and checks the documentation the firm's policy requires, flagging third-party payments and cash deposits shortly before subscription.
- MLRO reporting (depth 2). The agent compiles the monthly view of politically exposed clients, overdue reviews, alerts and reports filed. See how to prepare MLRO management information with an AI agent.
Connection mapping shows why sources need classes. A company registry extract is a record from the system of record. A news article naming the client's brother-in-law as a minister's aide is external, and a client's own description of a relationship is declared. The agent must keep them apart: a match built on a news story alone is a lead, not a finding. The guide to AI compliance agents explains why.
What stays with people?
Accepting a politically exposed client needs senior management approval under the firm's rules. That approval cannot be delegated to an agent, however complete its file.
Decisions to file a suspicious transaction report with the financial intelligence unit, to exit a client, or to freeze an account stay with the compliance officer and MLRO. In Nigeria these decisions can have consequences for staff and relationships, which is another reason they must sit with accountable people.
Suitability judgements, complaint outcomes and engagement with SEC Nigeria or the CBN stay human, as do data breach decisions under the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
Which rules apply in Nigeria?
SEC Nigeria registers and supervises fund managers, portfolio managers, investment advisers and brokers, including their conduct, client due diligence and AML duties. The Central Bank of Nigeria supervises banks, including private banking, domiciliary accounts and foreign exchange dealings, and sets AML/CFT requirements for the institutions it regulates. AML duties follow the FATF Recommendations, including enhanced due diligence on politically exposed persons.
The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, enforced by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, governs client data: a lawful basis for processing, purpose limitation, minimisation, security and rights for individuals. Screening and connection mapping process sensitive information about clients and third parties, which needs a clear lawful basis and careful retention.
Nigeria has no AI-specific law. Our guide to how AI agents are regulated in Nigeria covers the expectations that apply. For clients with assets in the EU or UK, GDPR or UK GDPR may apply to data held there.

How should a Nigerian wealth firm start?
Weeks 1 to 4: start with funding trail checks on dollar fund subscriptions. Payment records are internal and the rules are clear. Name the officer who owns findings.
Weeks 5 to 8: replay connection mapping on existing politically exposed clients whose links your team already knows. Count missed links and false matches, especially common surnames.
Weeks 9 to 13: certify both at depth 1 and begin drafting source of wealth assessments for new high-value clients, with the MLRO reviewing every one. French firms face different documents and rules; see our brief on compliance agents in French wealth management.
Questions people ask
How does the agent handle common names in screening?
It should compare dates of birth, addresses and known associates before reporting a match, and show the evidence for each. A person decides on borderline matches.
Can the agent verify property titles?
It can read the documents provided and check them for consistency. Confirming a title usually needs a search through proper channels, which a person arranges.
Does the agent need access to client emails?
Not for most uses. Account, payment and onboarding records are enough. Access to correspondence should be case-specific and recorded.
