AI agents for operations leaders in business banking in Nigeria

What AI agents can do for business banking operations in Nigeria, from failed transfer reversals to FX import documents, and how CBN rules apply.

Nigerian business banking operations clear failed instant transfers and reversals, settle merchant point-of-sale disputes, process documentation for foreign exchange on imports and onboard companies. AI agents can reconcile and reverse routine failed transfers within limits, assemble FX files and draft onboarding. People keep approvals and fraud calls. The CBN and Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 apply.

What do business banking operations leaders in Nigeria spend their time on?

Failed transfers dominate the queue. A business sends an instant transfer, its account is debited, and the beneficiary is not credited, or a credit arrives twice. Customers chase operations for reversals, and the CBN expects failed transactions to be resolved and refunded within short timelines. Each case needs the transaction trail across the bank, the switch and the counterparty bank.

Merchant disputes are the second. Business customers accept card and transfer payments through point-of-sale terminals, and settlement shortfalls, duplicate debits on their own customers and terminal faults generate a steady flow of claims.

Foreign exchange is the third. Importers need documentation in order before the bank can process FX for their transactions, and operations checks invoices, import documents and approvals. Onboarding companies means verifying registration with the company registry and each director's bank verification number, and identifying beneficial owners.

Where can AI agents help?

  • Failed transfer reconciliation (depth 3). The agent traces a failed transfer across the bank's ledger and switch records, confirms the beneficiary was not credited, and reverses the debit within the bank's limits. Cases where records conflict, or the amount is above the limit, are held for a person.
  • Merchant dispute drafting (depth 2). The agent matches the merchant's claim with terminal logs and settlement records, and drafts the resolution or the claim to the counterparty. An analyst approves.
  • FX documentation checks (depth 1). The agent compares the importer's invoice, import documents and approvals with the FX request, and lists discrepancies for the trade officer.
  • Onboarding file assembly (depth 2). The agent compares the company registry record with the directors and shareholders declared, checks each director's identity verification result, and drafts the file with gaps listed.

Reversals are the use with the strongest case, because the volume is high and customers feel delays directly. They are also the use where bounds matter most. The agent reverses only when sealed records from the bank's ledger and the switch agree that the beneficiary was not credited. A customer's screenshot showing the debit is useful context, not proof. Our guide to deploying AI agents: train, shadow, certify, widen explains how the agent earns depth 3 for this one capability.

What stays with people?

Reversals where records conflict, where fraud is suspected, or where the amount exceeds the bank's limit stay with a person. A reversal paid in error is hard to recover.

FX approvals and decisions on incomplete import documentation stay with authorised officers; the consequences for the customer and the bank's FX position are significant. So do account approvals for complex ownership, account restrictions and suspicious transaction reports.

Customer communication on held cases matters too. A business owner waiting for a reversal will call the branch, the contact centre and their relationship manager. The agent can draft a status update from the case record, but promises about timing or outcome should come from a person who knows where the counterparty bank has got to.

Ownership of the agent should sit with the operations leader who owns the queue. Our answer on who should own an AI agent in a business sets out why.

Which rules apply in Nigeria?

The Central Bank of Nigeria licenses and supervises banks. Its rules cover customer due diligence, beneficial ownership, foreign exchange documentation and dispensation, resolution of failed electronic transactions, consumer protection and the management of technology and outsourcing risk. An agent processing reversals sits inside a critical customer-facing process and must be covered by continuity plans. Our playbook on running business continuity tests with an AI agent shows how.

AML/CFT duties follow the FATF Recommendations. The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, enforced by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, governs personal data of directors, signatories and shareholders, including identity numbers: lawful basis, purpose limitation, security and data subject rights.

Nigeria has no AI-specific law. Our guide to how AI agents are regulated in Nigeria covers the expectations that apply.

This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.

How should a Nigerian bank start?

Weeks 1 to 4: write the business case for failed transfer reconciliation, using today's backlog, turnaround and complaint volumes. Our guide on writing a business case for AI agents helps. Define the limit below which the agent may reverse.

Weeks 5 to 8: shadow the agent on live cases. It proposes reversals; your team acts as normal; compare every case, and investigate any where it would have reversed a transfer that was in fact credited.

Weeks 9 to 13: certify at depth 3 below the limit, keep larger reversals held, and start shadowing merchant disputes. Singapore's business banking operations work differently; see our brief on operations agents in Singapore business banking.

Questions people ask

Can the agent reverse a transfer the beneficiary bank says it credited?

No. Conflicting records mean the case is held for a person, who works with the counterparty bank to resolve it.

Does the agent need access to bank verification number data?

It needs the verification result, not the full record. Limiting it to the result reduces privacy risk and meets minimisation duties.

What if the switch is down?

The agent cannot confirm the trail and holds every case. Your continuity plan should cover how people work the queue until records are available.
