AI agents for operations leaders in insurance in India

What AI agents can do for insurance operations in India on cashless approvals, free-look cancellations and grievances, what stays human, and IRDAI rules.

Indian insurance operations leaders can use AI agents to review hospital cashless requests, process free-look cancellations, handle policy servicing changes, draft grievance replies and answer policy questions in regional languages. Claim rejections, mis-selling findings, premium decisions and ombudsman responses stay with people. IRDAI regulations on claims, policyholder protection and grievances, and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023, apply.

What do insurance operations leaders in India spend their time on?

Health claims at speed. Cashless hospitalisation is the core of health insurance, and the insurer or its third-party administrator must decide pre-authorisation requests at admission and final bills at discharge quickly, because patients are waiting to go home. IRDAI expects cashless decisions to be prompt, and every query sent back to the hospital costs time.

Servicing through many channels. Policies are sold through agents, banks, brokers, digital platforms and the insurer's own branches. Customers request nominee changes, address updates, free-look cancellations within the window after receiving the policy, and surrender values for life policies. Each request has documents to check and timelines to meet.

Grievances and mis-selling. Complaints about policies sold through bank branches or by agents, sometimes to customers who did not understand what they bought, are a persistent issue. Grievances must be acknowledged and resolved within IRDAI's timelines, and unresolved ones can go to the insurance ombudsman.

Where can AI agents help?

  • Cashless request review (depth 2). The agent checks the hospital's request against the policy terms, sum insured, waiting periods, sub-limits and room rent rules, and drafts the approval amount and any deductions for a medical officer or claims approver.
  • Free-look cancellations (depth 3). The agent confirms the request is within the free-look window, calculates the refund after permitted deductions and processes it.
  • Policy servicing changes (depth 2 and 3). Address and contact changes are processed at depth 3 after verification; nominee changes and anything affecting benefits are drafted for a person.
  • Grievance drafting (depth 2). The agent assembles the sales record, policy documents and call recordings, and drafts a reply. A grievance officer decides and sends.
  • Policy questions in regional languages (depth 2 and 3). The agent answers questions from the policy wording using approved translations. See answering insurance policy questions with an AI agent.

Cashless review is a case for drafting, not deciding. Room rent sub-limits and proportionate deductions are complex, and an error either costs the insurer or leaves a patient with an unexpected bill at discharge. The agent applies every rule and shows its working; a person approves.

What stays with people, and why?

Claim rejections and partial settlements stay with claims approvers and medical officers. They need clinical and contractual judgement and are the most common subject of grievances.

Mis-selling findings and refunds stay with people. They involve judgement about what the customer was told and understood.

Premium decisions stay with actuaries and underwriters. Our answer to whether an AI agent can set insurance premiums explains why. Ombudsman responses stay with named officers.

Which rules apply in India?

IRDAI regulates insurers, intermediaries and third-party administrators. Its rules cover policyholder protection, claims settlement, cashless processing, free-look periods, grievance redressal and outsourcing, and it supervises how insurers treat customers across channels. Insurers remain responsible for outsourced activities, including work done by an agent's supplier. The insurance ombudsman hears unresolved complaints.

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 governs personal data, including health data in claims. Processing needs consent or another permitted ground, notices must state the purpose, data must be secured and erased when no longer needed, and the insurer as data fiduciary answers for its processors. Health records from hospitals should be used only for the claim.

India has no AI-specific law; our overview of how AI agents are regulated in India covers the wider picture. Insurers with European operations should note that the EU AI Act lists life and health insurance pricing as high-risk; see whether an insurance pricing agent is high-risk under the EU AI Act.

How do you start in the first 90 days?

Days 1 to 30: start with free-look cancellations. The window, deductions and refund are defined, and timelines are measurable.

Days 31 to 60: shadow cashless request review for one product. Compare the agent's draft amounts and deductions with the approvers' decisions, line by line.

Days 61 to 90: certify free-look cancellations at depth 3 and cashless review at depth 2. Add grievance drafting in shadow. Follow deploying AI agents: train, shadow, certify, widen. For premium collection and claim payments, see our brief on operations agents in Indian payments.

Where Pryme fits

In Pryme, the policy schedule is sealed evidence, the hospital's itemised bill is signed by the hospital, and a patient's statement about pre-existing conditions is declared. The cashless agent shows which source supports each deduction, so the approver can see at once whether a deduction rests on firm ground. Every draft and decision is filed.

Questions people ask

Can the agent approve cashless requests?

Not at first. Keep approval with a claims approver until certification shows the agent's drafts are reliable for that product.

Can the agent decide mis-selling complaints?

No. It assembles the evidence. A person decides, because the question is what the customer understood.

Which languages should the agent support first?

Those your policyholders use most, with translations of policy wording approved by your legal and product teams.

Decide what your agents may do. Prove it. Enforce it.
