QA testers in Australia already do much of what AI operations needs: designing cases, finding edge conditions and refusing to sign off until the evidence is in. What does QA work look like in Australian software teams today?
A QA tester in an Australian software company, bank technology team or government digital agency writes test cases from requirements, runs manual and automated tests, logs defects with clear reproduction steps, checks fixes, maintains regression suites and signs off releases. Much of the job is negative testing: proving what the system should refuse. Many testers also own test data and environments.
That last point matters more than it seems. Agent systems are only as good as the cases they are tested against, and the person who knows how to build a representative, privacy-safe test set is valuable from the first day.
What changes as agents arrive?
Agents show up in two ways for a QA tester: as tools that help you test, and as products you must test.
- Test case drafts, depth 2. An agent drafts test cases from a user story. You check coverage, especially the negative and boundary cases it tends to miss.

- Testing the agent itself. When your product includes an agent, you test what it may do at each depth, whether it refuses out-of-scope requests, whether it escalates when it should, and whether it resists prompt injection.
The last item is the real shift. Testing a governed agent means checking it against floors, not just expected outputs. Gates such as grounded, refusal, scope, escalation and drift are test categories a QA tester already thinks in.

What skills and certificate do employers look for?
They want someone who understands how a governed agent decides, can design cases that expose its weak points, and writes findings a developer or risk owner can act on. They also want proof that you can review live decisions, not just test in a lab.
