German teachers, including those considering leaving a civil service post, can move into AI operations as education agent reviewers, learning content quality reviewers or training operations analysts. EU law treats AI that assesses learners or decides access to education as high-risk, so providers need people who can review its output and document each decision.
What does teaching work look like in Germany today?
Education is run by the federal states, so curricula, school types and teacher training differ between them. Many teachers are civil servants, which shapes careers and pensions; others are employed on contracts, including career changers who entered teaching from another profession. The job is lessons, marking, reports, parent conferences, inclusion and increasingly digital learning, with a lot of administration around it.
Outside schools, Germany has a large training sector: adult education centres, vocational training providers, chambers, corporate academies and edtech firms. These employers are often quicker to adopt agents than state schools, and they recruit former teachers for their assessment and learning design skills.
How will agents change education work?
Depth is earned per agent on the provider's own cases, and every verdict is filed in an append-only record.
- Feedback drafts, depth 2. The agent drafts comments against the assessment criteria. A teacher or trainer edits and releases them and keeps the grade.
- Learner enquiries, depth 2 or 3. Routine questions on courses, dates and registration can be answered at depth 3 by a certified agent. Questions about an individual's results or support are drafted for a person.
- Course admission checks, depth 1 to 2. The agent checks applications against entry requirements, such as prior qualifications, and drafts an assessment. A person decides.
- Learning material drafts, depth 2. It drafts exercises and summaries. A subject specialist checks them.
- Exam supervision support, depth 1. In online exams, it can flag irregularities for a person to review. It never concludes that a learner cheated.
A learner's statement that they hold a qualification is declared information. Before admission, a person checks the certificate itself.

What will employers look for?
German employers will look for documented qualifications, consistent assessment, careful handling of learners' data and clear written reasoning. Expect a practical exercise: review three agent-drafted feedback comments against criteria and justify each decision. Why teachers make strong AI agent reviewers explains how your marking and moderation experience applies.
The Certified Pryme Operator is a professional certificate, not a teaching qualification, state examination or licence. It requires a written exam of 40 questions in 60 minutes with a pass mark of four in five, and a two-week practicum of review decisions held to nineteen in twenty correct with no missed red line, signed off by a Pryme assessor. How teachers can prepare for the AI operator exam and how teachers can complete the operator practicum cover both parts. It is issued through VerifyDoc.ai and can be checked at source by number or QR code. List it in your tabular CV with its number.
Which rules shape oversight work in Germany?
The EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) entered into force on 1 August 2024 and phases in over several years. AI used to decide access or admission to education and training, to evaluate learning outcomes, to assess the appropriate level of education, or to monitor learners during tests is treated as high-risk. Providers using such systems are deployers under Article 26, must assign competent human oversight (Article 14) and keep logs. Public bodies may need a fundamental rights impact assessment under Article 27. Article 4 expects AI literacy among staff, and Article 50 requires learners to be told when they interact with an AI system.
GDPR governs learners' data, with specific protection for children and impact assessments under Article 35 for high-risk processing. The data protection authorities of the federal states supervise. Staff representatives in public and private employers usually have a say in introducing systems that can monitor staff.

What does a 90-day plan look like?
Weeks 1 to 4. Earn the free Foundations badge. Write up ten assessment or moderation decisions with reasons.
Weeks 5 to 8. Complete the Operator lessons, read or heard as audio, and sit the exam.
Weeks 9 to 13. Complete the practicum on a simulated queue in a free workspace, ideally in the school holidays. Have the certificate issued, add it to your CV and LinkedIn, and apply to training providers, edtech firms and corporate academies. If you are early in your career, how graduates in Germany can move into AI operations offers a parallel route.
Questions people ask
Should a civil servant teacher leave to do this?
Not without careful thought about pension and status. Many start with Foundations, which is free, then test the work through a pilot or part-time role before deciding.
Do training providers value teaching experience?
Usually. Designing and marking assessments, giving feedback and handling learners fairly are exactly what review roles need.
Is German required?
For most domestic education and training employers, yes. International edtech firms may work in English.
