Yes for reminders, customer-authorised payments and recorded promises to pay. An AI agent can contact borrowers, take a payment the borrower authorises and log arrangements inside a pre-approved plan. Taking money without the borrower's authority, agreeing plans outside policy, reporting defaults, selling debts and starting legal action stay with people.
What makes collections sensitive?
Collections is where lending touches people at their most stretched. A borrower in arrears may have lost a job, fallen ill or be dealing with several debts at once. The way they are contacted can help them recover or push them further into difficulty.
Many of the actions in collections are hard to reverse. A default reported to credit reference agencies follows a borrower for years. Money taken from an account can leave them unable to pay rent. A debt passed to an agency changes who the borrower deals with. And a borrower pressured into a plan they cannot keep ends up worse off. In the UK, the FCA Consumer Duty expects good outcomes for retail customers, which bears directly on how arrears are handled.
What may the agent do with the borrower's money and data?
| Task | The agent | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|
| Reminders | Sends scheduled reminders from approved templates at depth 3 | Contact that exceeds the lender's frequency rules |
| Explaining arrears | Explains the amount, how it arose and any charges | Disputes about whether the charges are right |
| Taking a payment | Takes a payment the borrower authorises in the session | Taking money the borrower has not authorised |
| Promises to pay | Records the promise and follows up | Deciding what happens when promises keep failing |
| Short arrangements | Agrees plans inside a pre-approved matrix | Plans outside the matrix |
| Vulnerability | Recognises indicators and hands over at once | The conversation from that point |
| Default, sale or legal action | Prepares the file | All decisions |
The agent never takes money on its own initiative. Collecting funds from another account the borrower holds, where the terms allow it, is a decision for a person under the lender's policy. Agents that initiate payments raise questions of their own, set out in what agentic payments are.
A worked example
Take a consumer lender with a borrower who has missed one monthly payment of 240 on a personal loan.
On day five, the agent sends the approved reminder by text and email. The borrower replies that their pay was late and they can pay on Friday. The agent records the promise to pay and sets a follow-up. On Friday the borrower opens the app and authorises the payment, which the agent takes and applies.
Two months later, the same borrower misses again and replies that they have been signed off work with depression. The agent does not ask for a payment or propose a plan. It acknowledges what they have said, tells them a specialist will contact them within a stated time, pauses automated reminders, and passes the case to the financial support team with the history. A person takes it from there.
What controls make it safe?
- Contact rules as bounds. The lender's rules on how often, when and by what channel borrowers may be contacted are enforced at the moment of sending.
- No unprompted collection. Taking money is limited to payments the borrower authorises in the session.
- Matrix-bound arrangements. Any plan the agent agrees must sit inside the approved matrix; everything else is drafted for a person.
- Vulnerability stops automation. Indicators are defined and tested, and automated contact pauses when one appears.
- Final steps held. Default notices, credit reporting, debt sale and legal action are outside the agent's scope.
The same principles apply in business-to-business collections, with lower vulnerability risk but similar care about contact and disputes; see how to chase overdue customer invoices with an AI agent. Writing off a debt is a separate decision again, covered in whether an AI agent can write off a loan. The wider limits are in AI agents in banking: what they may and may not do.
Where Pryme fits
In Pryme, sending reminders, taking an authorised payment and agreeing a plan are separate capabilities, each certified on the lender's own past collections cases. The lender's contact rules and arrangement matrix sit in the minimum chain as the customer's own limits, so an action outside them is held, and every verdict is filed.
Questions people ask
Can the agent call borrowers?
If the lender uses voice agents, the same rules apply: approved scripts, contact limits, disclosure that the borrower is speaking to an AI system, and immediate handover on any sign of vulnerability.
Can the agent add late payment charges?
Charges should be applied by the loan system under the agreement's terms, not by the agent. The agent can explain them and, within policy, refund them.
Should borrowers be able to talk to a person?
Yes, at any point. The agent should offer it in every conversation and hand over without friction when asked.
