Yes, at a rate the customer has accepted. An AI agent can carry out an exchange once the customer has seen the quoted rate and fees, accepted them and confirmed the amount, within the bank's limits. It should never convert on its own initiative or advise on where rates are heading. Large or unusual conversions stay with a person.
Why is a currency exchange hard to reverse?
Once a conversion is done at a rate, it is done. Converting back is a second trade, at a new rate and with a second spread. If the rate moved in the meantime, the customer loses money. If the conversion was a mistake, there is no way to restore the original position at no cost.
That makes an exchange a compensable action at best. The money stays with the customer, but its value has changed. For a customer converting savings to pay school fees abroad, an unwanted conversion at a poor moment can cost a real sum.
What are the conditions?
The agent may carry out a conversion when:
- the customer asked for it, in an authenticated session;
- the agent showed the rate, any fees and the amount the customer will receive, and the customer accepted that quote;
- the quote is still valid when the conversion is executed;
- the amount is within the customer's and the bank's limits for this channel;
- both currency balances belong to the same customer.
If the quote expires, the agent gets a new one and asks again. It does not execute at a different rate from the one accepted.
What may the agent do, and what stays with a person?
| Task | The agent | Stays with a person |
|---|---|---|
| Quoting a rate | Shows the live rate, fees and the amount received | Nothing routine |
| Converting on instruction | Converts at the accepted rate, at depth 3 within limits | Amounts above the limit |
| Converting and paying abroad | Prepares the payment after conversion | The customer authenticates the payment |
| Rate alerts set by the customer | Notifies the customer when a rate is reached | Nothing |
| Converting automatically at a target rate | Only if the customer set a standing order with defined terms | Any change to those terms |
| Advising on timing or direction | Never | A person, if the bank offers that service |
| Corporate hedging | Prepares analysis | Treasury decides |
Hedging is a separate question, with very different stakes; see whether an AI agent can hedge foreign exchange exposure.
A worked example
Take a bank offering multi-currency accounts. A customer with pounds and euro balances asks the agent to convert 2,000 pounds to euros for a holiday.
The agent shows the rate, the fee and the euro amount, with a note that the quote is valid for thirty seconds. The customer accepts. The agent executes the conversion at that rate and confirms both balances.
A week later, the customer asks: "Should I convert another 5,000 now, or will the rate improve?" The agent does not answer the question it was asked. It explains that it cannot advise on rate movements, offers to show today's rate, and offers to set a rate alert that will notify the customer if the rate reaches a level they choose. The customer sets an alert. When the alert triggers, the agent notifies them and waits for an instruction.
What controls make it safe?
- Quote-and-accept, recorded. Every conversion is tied to a quote the customer accepted, with its time and validity.
- No execution on a stale quote. If the rate expired, the agent re-quotes.
- Limits per conversion and per day. Set by the bank and, where offered, by the customer. The lower one wins.
- No initiative. The agent cannot start a conversion the customer did not request or set up as a standing instruction.
- No market commentary. Forecasts and timing advice are outside the agent's scope.
Inside the bank, currency positions also need revaluing in the books. That is an accounting process an agent can support, covered in whether an AI agent can handle foreign currency revaluation and how to run foreign currency revaluation with an AI agent. The wider limits are in AI agents in banking: what they may and may not do.
Where Pryme fits
In Pryme, quoting a rate and executing a conversion are separate capabilities. The conversion is checked at the moment of action against the customer's limits and the accepted quote, and anything outside them is held. A conversion the customer did not request is refused, and the verdict, with the bound that decided it, is filed.
Questions people ask
Can the agent convert money to pay a foreign invoice for a business?
It can prepare the conversion and payment for an authorised user to approve under the company's mandate. For larger amounts, the business may need a treasury or dealer conversation instead.
What if the customer converts the wrong amount?
The agent can quote the reverse conversion, but it will be at a new rate and spread. It should explain the cost before the customer decides.
Can the agent explain why rates change?
It can explain in general terms how exchange rates are quoted and why spreads exist. Explaining why a specific rate moved today drifts towards commentary, and is best avoided.
