Can an AI agent switch a customer's account to another bank?

An AI agent at the new bank can submit a customer's account switch once they confirm the terms and date. Restricted accounts need a named person.

From the new bank's side, yes; from the old bank's, it mostly answers questions. An AI agent at the receiving bank can take the customer's switch request, confirm the date and what will move, and submit it at depth 3. Restrictions, holder mismatches, overdrafts or business mandates go to a named person, because a completed switch is hard to undo.

How does an account switch actually work?

In markets with a formal switching service, the customer asks their new bank to switch. The new bank requests the old account's details, moves the balance, transfers standing orders and direct debits, redirects incoming payments, and closes the old account on the agreed date. The old bank cooperates through the scheme; it does not start the process.

That shapes what each bank's agent can do. The new bank's agent drives the switch with the customer. The old bank's agent can explain what will happen, answer questions about payments that will move, and help the customer settle anything that blocks the switch, such as an overdraft. Where no formal service exists, a "switch" is really opening a new account and closing the old one, with the customer moving payments themselves.

What conditions let the agent submit the switch?

  • the customer has an account open with the new bank, in the same name or names as the old one;
  • the customer confirmed the switch date and understands that the old account will close;
  • the customer has seen which payments move automatically and which do not, such as recurring card payments to merchants;
  • the old account has no overdraft or the customer has arranged to repay it;
  • there is no restriction, court order or bereavement marker on the old account that the new bank can see.

Matching holders is the condition that most often fails. A joint account cannot be switched into a sole account, or the other way round, without both holders agreeing.

What may the agent do, and where must it stop?

Step The agent Where it stops
Explaining the switch and what moves Explains from the scheme's rules, depth 1 Nothing
Checking holders match Compares names and holders on both accounts Any mismatch
Confirming date and terms Records the customer's choices Nothing
Submitting the switch Submits at depth 3 Restricted or business accounts
Overdraft on the old account Explains the options Agreeing repayment terms
Joint-to-sole or sole-to-joint Records the request A person, with every holder's agreement
Cancelling a submitted switch Cancels before the cut-off on the customer's request After the cut-off

Opening the new account comes first and has its own checks; see whether an AI agent can open a bank account for a customer. Closing the old account without switching is covered in whether an AI agent can close a bank account.

An example: a switch with a gym membership

Take a customer who opens an account with a new bank and asks its agent to switch everything from their old bank. The agent confirms the holders match, the old account has no overdraft, and the customer wants the switch to complete on a Monday a week away.

It shows the customer what will move: salary redirection, three direct debits and two standing orders. It then explains what will not move automatically: a gym membership and two subscriptions charged to the old debit card. The customer notes them to update. The agent submits the switch.

On the switch date, the balance arrives, the payments move, and the old account closes. The customer updates the card on their subscriptions. The record shows the customer's confirmation of the date and the list of items that would not move.

What controls make it safe?

  • Holder matching from the records. The agent compares holders using verified account data, not the customer's description.
  • The customer confirms the closure. Submission requires recorded confirmation that the old account will close.
  • Warnings about what does not move. Recurring card payments are listed every time.
  • Fraud signals checked. A new account opened days ago with a switch request and new contact details is a pattern linked to identity fraud and account takeover, and it is held.
  • A filed verdict. The submission, checks and deciding bound are recorded.

The general limits are in AI agents in banking: what they may and may not do.

Questions people ask

Can the old bank's agent try to keep the customer?

It can answer questions and explain the bank's products if the customer asks. It should not delay, discourage or complicate a switch the customer has chosen.

What happens to payments sent to the old account after the switch?

In formal switching services, they are usually redirected to the new account for a period. The agent can explain how long and remind the customer to update payers.

Can the agent switch a savings account?

Formal switching services often cover current accounts only. Savings usually move by transfer, and the agent can help the customer arrange that.
