Can an AI agent tell a customer their balance?

An AI agent can tell a customer their balance once they are authenticated, explaining available versus settled balance. Restricted accounts need care.

Yes, once the customer is authenticated to the standard the channel requires. Telling a customer their balance is a read at depth 1 and one of the most common things a bank's agent does. The care is in the detail: saying which balance, explaining pending items, never telling anyone else, and handing restricted or disputed accounts to a named person.

Which balance does the customer mean?

Most accounts have more than one balance, and confusion between them causes complaints. The ledger balance is what has settled. The available balance is what the customer can spend now, after pending card payments, holds and any overdraft. A cheque paid in may show in one and not the other.

A good answer gives the available balance first, because that is usually what the customer wants to know, then the settled balance if they differ, with the reason. "You have 420 available. Your balance is 510, but a card payment of 90 at a petrol station is still pending." The agent reads both from the core banking system; it never calculates them.

What conditions decide it?

Authentication. In the bank's app, the customer is already logged in. On a phone call or in a web chat, the agent must complete the bank's verification first. Knowing an account number and a date of birth is not enough in most banks' policies.

The listener. On a voice call, the agent cannot see who else is in the room. Many banks let the customer choose whether to hear the balance read aloud. For business accounts, only users with permission to view that account should hear it.

The account's status. A balance on an ordinary account is routine. A balance on an account that is frozen, subject to a court order, or held for an investigation needs care, because the customer's next question will be "why can't I use it?", and the answer may be sensitive.

What may the agent do, and where must it stop?

Situation The agent Where it stops
Authenticated customer, ordinary account Gives available and settled balances, depth 1 Nothing
Pending items or holds Explains each from the record Disputes about them
Joint account Gives the balance to either holder Nothing routine
Caller says they are a spouse or child Declines without recorded authority A person checks authority
Account frozen or under an order Gives the facts the policy allows Explaining the reason
Customer says the balance is wrong Shows recent transactions Investigating the dispute
Deceased customer's account Refers to the bereavement process Executors are handled by a person

The restricted case matters most. If an account is held because of a suspicion the bank has reported, telling the customer why can amount to tipping off. The agent states only what the policy permits and passes the conversation to a person.

An example: a balance on a call

Take a customer who calls the bank's voice line and asks for their balance. The agent completes the bank's verification. It asks whether the customer is somewhere they are happy to hear it read aloud. They are.

The agent reads the available balance of 1,240 and adds that a rent payment of 850 is scheduled for tomorrow. The customer asks why yesterday's salary has not arrived. The agent checks: no incoming payment from the employer is recorded. It says so, explains what the bank can see and cannot see about incoming payments, and offers to note the query. The customer decides to check with their employer first.

At the start of the call, the agent said it was an AI agent and how to reach a person. The record shows the verification, the balances read and the query.

What controls make it safe?

  • Verification before any figure. The agent's tool returns balances only for a verified session.
  • Balances from the system of record. Figures arrive sealed from the core banking system with their timestamp.
  • Third-party authority from the record. Powers of attorney and business permissions are checked, never taken on the caller's word.
  • Restricted-account scripts. What may be said about a frozen or ordered account is set by policy, and the agent hands over beyond it.
  • AI disclosure. Customers are told they are speaking to an AI, a point covered in should an AI support agent tell customers it is an AI.

Telling customers the result of a claim follows a similar logic with more at stake; see whether an AI agent can tell a customer the outcome of their claim. Customers sometimes ask what the agent itself can see about them, covered in answering customer questions about how their data is used with an AI agent. The general limits are in AI agents in banking: what they may and may not do.

Questions people ask

Can the agent send the balance by text message?

If the customer has set up balance alerts to a verified phone number, yes. Sending a balance to a new number on request is not routine.

Can the agent tell a customer their balance before payday?

It can show scheduled payments and the projected balance from the bank's own records. It should present projections as estimates, since incoming payments can be late.

Should the agent comment on a low balance?

It can point out scheduled payments that the balance will not cover. Commenting on how the customer spends is not its role.
