It depends, and anyone quoting a figure is guessing. What changes is the responsibility in the role. A person who supervises AI agents answers for many more decisions than one who handled cases by hand, and often holds approval rights over actions an agent may not take alone. Employers who grade roles by responsibility may value that differently.
What changes in a role when you supervise agents?
Compare two versions of the same job. In the first, a claims handler settles thirty claims a day by hand. In the second, an agent drafts settlements for routine claims inside limits it has earned, and the handler reviews the ones it holds back, samples the rest and reports patterns.
The second handler makes fewer decisions personally but answers for far more. Each correction they send to the agent's owner may change hundreds of future outcomes. They may also hold the right to approve settlements above the agent's limit. That is a different kind of job, closer to quality control and delegated authority than to processing.
What raises the value of a role, and what does not?
| Raises it | Does not, on its own |
|---|---|
| Approval rights over high-risk actions | Having "AI" in the job title |
| Answering for an agent's results over time | Using an agent as a personal tool |
| Domain knowledge the agent cannot replace | Speed through a review queue |
| A certificate an employer can check | Course attendance without assessment |
| Writing reasons that improve the agent | Approving everything the agent drafts |
The left column is about accountability. The right column is about activity. Employers grade accountability.
Why does domain knowledge matter so much to the value?
An agent can read every policy and still miss what an experienced person would see. The hardest part of a review role to replace is knowing, from years of cases, when a decision is technically allowed but wrong. That is why the piece on why your domain knowledge is the hardest part of an AI operations job to replace argues that experienced staff should not undersell themselves when they move.
Access matters too. In a governed system, an agent may read far more than it is allowed to change: the article on why finance agents need read access to more than they can change explains the principle. The person who holds the right to change things, after reviewing what the agent saw, carries the weight.
What does this look like for one person?
Take an accounts payable clerk we will call Daniel at a mid-sized distributor. Before agents, he matched invoices and keyed payments. Now an agent matches invoices to orders and drafts payment runs. Daniel reviews held items, such as a supplier's bank details that changed by email, which is an external claim and cannot authorise a payment on its own. He approves payment runs above the agent's limit and writes monthly notes on its errors.
When his employer regraded the team, Daniel's new role was placed with the finance controls staff rather than the processing staff. That reflected the approval rights he held, not the tool he used. Another employer might have done it differently. Nothing here guarantees any change in pay.
How do you make the case for a higher grading?
Describe your role by what you answer for, not what you process. "Approves payments above the agent's limit and owns its error reporting" makes a different case from "uses AI to process invoices." Bring evidence: your record of decisions, patterns you caught, and a professional certificate employers can check.

Questions people ask
Will a certificate get me a pay rise?
No certificate can promise that. It shows an employer, in a way they can check, that you can review to a standard. How they reward that is their decision.
Is it better to move employers or stay?
Staying lets you show judgment on a queue people already trust you with. Moving can reset your grading. Weigh which gives you the clearer record of responsibility.
Do builder roles carry more weight than reviewer roles?
Often they carry different responsibility: designing and certifying agents rather than supervising them day to day. Neither is automatically valued above the other; it depends on the employer's structure.
