Turn the checks you already make on invoices into review of an AI agent's payment decisions. Agents now match invoices and draft payment runs; someone must judge the exceptions they hold, catch suspicious supplier changes and approve payments above their limits. Learn how governed agents work, earn a checkable certificate, and apply for finance operations review roles.
What do you already know that an agent cannot?
More than you might think. Accounts payable is full of judgment calls that look routine from outside.
- Three-way matching exceptions. You know when a price variance is a typo, a contract uplift or an overcharge.
- Supplier bank detail changes. You know that a change requested by email, especially with urgency, is the classic sign of payment fraud.
- Duplicate invoices. You recognise the same invoice resent with a new number or date.
- Supplier relationships. You know which suppliers always invoice early, which send credit notes late, and which need chasing for purchase order numbers.
Each of those is a case an agent will hold or get wrong. Your experience is the review standard.
How does the work change when an agent takes over matching?
| Task | The agent | You |
|---|---|---|
| Read the invoice and match to order and receipt | Depth 1 and 3 within limits | Sample matched items for errors |
| Code the invoice to the right account | Drafts at depth 2 | Approve or correct coding |
| Flag variances, duplicates, new bank details | Holds for a named person | Investigate and decide |
| Build the payment run | Drafts it | Approve runs above the agent's limit |
| Change supplier bank details | Never on an emailed request alone | Verify through the sealed supplier record or a signed confirmation |
That last row matters. In a governed system, every fact is stamped with where it came from. An emailed invoice or bank change is external, the weakest class, and cannot authorise a payment on its own. Knowing why is the heart of the job.
What should you learn?
Three things, in this order.
- The vocabulary of governed agents. Depth, the four verdicts (allowed, held, refused, withheld), provenance, and the rule that the tightest bound decides.
- How to write a useful reason. When you reject a draft, your reason teaches the agent's owner what to fix. "Bank change came by email, not verified" is useful. "Wrong" is not.
- How to spot a pattern. One wrong coding is an error. The same wrong coding across one supplier for a month is a source problem worth reporting.
What does the move look like in practice?
Take an accounts payable clerk we will call Sofia at a small accounting practice that runs payables for its clients. The practice adopts an agent to match and code invoices. Sofia volunteers to review its holds. In her second week she catches the agent treating a client's new supplier, set up from a scanned letter, as verified. She writes it up, the practice adds a rule that new suppliers need a signed confirmation, and Sofia's role becomes reviewer for the payables agent across all clients.
That is the usual path: inside your current employer first, if it adopts agents. If not, you apply elsewhere with evidence.
Which jobs should you apply for first?
Titles vary, so read duties. Look for adverts mentioning review of automated payments, exceptions, approval of payment runs, supplier verification or finance operations quality. Likely first titles include finance operations analyst, AP reviewer, payments controls assistant or AI operations analyst.

Where the Academy fits
At Pryme Intelligence Academy, Foundations (free, about four hours) explains how agents are governed. The Operator track then covers human review, teaching the agent and handling incidents, with module tests set in accounts payable in an accounting practice if that is your role. The practicum is two weeks of review decisions; if your employer does not use Pryme, you work a simulated queue. Certified Pryme Operator is checkable through VerifyDoc.ai.
Questions people ask
Will the agent replace accounts payable entirely?
Routine matching and keying will shrink. Exceptions, supplier verification and approvals stay with people, and those are the parts you are best at.
Do I need an accounting qualification to move up?
Not for review roles. For finance controls or owner roles, a professional accounting qualification can help, but it is not the only route.
Can I learn while working full-time?
Yes. Lessons work as audio or text in short blocks, and the practicum can fit around your current hours.
