Through review roles in industries where AI agents act on people's money, health or credit, and where US rules require explanations and oversight. Lenders, banks, insurers and healthcare administrators use agents to draft decisions a person must check. A career changer who knows one of those domains and holds a verifiable certificate has a credible route in.
Where is the work in the US?
There is no single federal AI law, so oversight comes through sector rules. That shapes where review roles appear.
- Consumer lending. Under ECOA and Regulation B, a lender must give specific reasons when it denies credit, including when a model is used. If an agent drafts a decline, someone must check the reasons are real and specific.
- Banking. Federal banking regulators such as the OCC and the Federal Reserve expect model risk to be managed, with interagency guidance SR 11-7 as the long-standing reference. The CFPB oversees consumer financial protection.
- Insurance. State insurance regulators oversee insurers, coordinated through the NAIC.
- Healthcare administration. HIPAA governs health information, so reviewers of claims or member messages must handle data carefully.
Some states add their own rules: California's privacy law (the CCPA as amended by the CPRA) and Colorado's AI act aimed at high-risk systems making consequential decisions. This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.
What will you do, and what will the agent do?
| Task | The agent | You |
|---|---|---|
| Read an application, claim or request | Depth 1 | Check it read the right records |
| Draft a decision and reasons | Depth 2 | Check the reasons are accurate and specific |
| Process routine items within limits | Depth 3 | Sample results |
| Hold denials, high amounts or complaints | Waits for a named person | Decide or escalate |
| File every verdict | Leaves a record | Write reasons that would stand up to an examiner |
What does a switch look like for one person?
Take a restaurant manager in Ohio we will call Marcus who wants weekday hours. He applies to a personal loan servicer whose agent drafts hardship plan offers to borrowers who have missed payments. The agent holds offers for borrowers who mention a medical emergency, a job loss or a dispute about the debt.
Marcus has never worked in finance, but he has managed staff through hard times and knows how people react to pressure. In his first month he notices the agent's drafts lead with the overdue amount and bury the hardship option. He suggests reversing the order. The owner tests the change on past cases, and the brief is updated. The skill was knowing how someone under stress reads a letter.
How do you prepare and apply?
- Pick an industry. Ideally one connected to your past work: healthcare roles to health insurers, retail to e-commerce, hospitality to lending servicing.
- Learn how governed agents decide. Depth, verdicts, provenance and escalation.
- Practise and get measured. Review realistic decisions to a set standard.
- Get a certificate employers can check. Verifiable at source.
- Rewrite your résumé. US résumés tend to be concise; lead with decisions, limits and results.
Titles vary widely: operations analyst, quality analyst, decision review specialist, servicing specialist, AI operations analyst. Search for duties: review, exceptions, approvals, quality and escalation.

Questions people ask
Is this the same as a state licence?
No. It is a professional certificate, not a government licence. Some roles, such as loan origination or insurance adjusting in certain states, need separate state licensing.
Do I need a degree?
Not for many review roles, though some employers ask for one. Check each listing and lead with evidence of judgment.
Can I do this remotely from any state?
Often, but employers may limit which states they hire in for tax, licensing or data reasons. Ask early.
