AI agent skills by role·Answer

How do AML investigators handle an action an AI agent has held for them?

AML investigators handle a held action by testing the evidence behind the agent's draft, the tipping-off risk and the reporting duty, then deciding.

An AML investigator treats a held action as a draft of their own work, not a verdict to confirm. They check which bound held it, test the agent's evidence against the transaction record, weigh the tipping-off risk of anything reaching the customer, then approve, edit or decline with a reason a regulator would accept.

What does an AML agent hold?

In financial crime work, the decisions that matter most are never the agent's to make alone. A typical AML agent reads alerts and transaction history at depth 1, drafts case narratives and recommendations at depth 2, and holds every consequential step for a named investigator. The usual held items are:

  • Closing an alert as a false positive, with the agent's drafted rationale.
  • Escalating a case to the money laundering reporting officer with a draft suspicious activity narrative.
  • Restricting or freezing an account pending investigation, which is hard to undo for the customer.
  • Requesting information from the customer, which carries tipping-off risk.
  • Recommending exit of a customer relationship.

The decision to report suspicion stays with people. FATF Recommendations set suspicious transaction reporting as a core duty, and no supervisor will accept "the agent decided not to report" as an answer.

What should the investigator check?

The bound that held it. If the customer's own limits route every closure above a risk score to a person, the question is whether the closure rationale is sound. If the source bound held it because a sanctions list check failed to load, the question is entirely different: the agent did not have the facts.

The evidence trail. Each fact in the agent's narrative should trace to its source. Transaction data from the core banking ledger is sealed. Customer due diligence documents may be signed by a verifying party. Adverse media is external and needs corroboration. A narrative that leans on an external news item for its key claim needs more work before it goes anywhere.

What the agent did not see. Agents work from the sources they are given. Linked accounts, prior cases and relationship manager notes may sit elsewhere. A good investigator asks what is missing before agreeing with what is present.

Tipping-off risk. Any held message to the customer must be read for what it reveals. A request for "information about recent transactions" is fine. A request that mentions an investigation is not.

How should the investigator decide?

Held action Approve when Edit when Decline when
Close alert Rationale explains the activity with sealed or signed evidence Rationale is right but thin; add the missing evidence The explanation rests on declared or external facts alone
Escalate with narrative Narrative is accurate and complete Facts are right but the account is unclear or overstated Suspicion is not supported; record why and close properly
Restrict account Risk of loss or harm is clear and current Scope is too broad, for example freezing all accounts when one is enough Evidence does not justify the impact on the customer
Contact customer Wording reveals nothing of the investigation Wording needs neutralising Contact would tip off; use another route

Every decision carries a reason. In AML, the reason is often the most scrutinised part of the file.

An example: a closure that was not

Take a payments firm's AML queue. The agent holds a draft closure for an alert on a small business account with a sudden rise in incoming transfers. The rationale says the activity matches seasonal trading, citing the customer's declared business profile.

The investigator checks the ledger and sees the transfers come from many new individual senders, which is not how the declared business usually gets paid. The declared profile cannot carry the closure. The investigator declines the closure, escalates internally with an edited narrative, and records that the agent relied on a declared fact the transaction pattern contradicts. The agent's owner reviews whether the agent should weigh declared profiles less in this situation.

Which controls keep this safe?

  • Investigators approve only within their authority; escalation decisions route to the reporting officer.
  • Agent-drafted customer messages are always held in AML cases.
  • Closures are sampled by a second investigator.
  • Investigators hold a current reviewer credential before approving closures, and lose the right while it is lapsed.

How other roles handle holds differs in useful ways; see how underwriters handle an action an AI agent has held and the definition of a held action. Market detail is in the brief on AML investigators in payments in Japan. The full map of roles is in AI agent skills by role.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy's Operator track teaches investigators to read the decision chain and the provenance of every fact before acting on a held case. Module tests are set in the learner's industry and role, so AML staff practise on alert closures and escalations. Certified Pryme Operator requires two weeks of real review decisions in which a missed red line fails the practicum.

Questions people ask

Can an agent ever close an alert without a person?

A business may allow that for the lowest-risk alert types at depth 3, with sampling. Most keep closures held until the agent's record on their own cases justifies more.

Should the agent draft the suspicious activity report?

It can draft the narrative from the evidence. The decision to report, and the final content, stay with the investigator and the reporting officer.

What if the agent's sanctions source is unavailable?

The agent should hold or refuse. The investigator should not approve anything that depended on that check until it has run.
