That depends on whose certificate it is. A person's certificate for overseeing agents is usually renewed with an update module covering what changed and a short check, before the expiry date. An agent's own certificate is renewed by running it again against real cases. Miss either and something stops: the person's approval rights, or the agent's permitted depth.
Two different certificates, two different renewals
"AI agent certificate" is used for two things, and the renewal is different for each.
A person's certificate shows they are competent to work with agents: to review and approve their actions, to build them, or to lead deployments. It expires because agents, products and rules change, and a skill tested once drifts.
An agent's certificate shows that a specific capability of a specific agent, for a specific business, passed certification on that business's own cases. It expires because the agent's sources, the business's operation and the model underneath can all change. Agent certificates lapse after 90 days, and a run that clears no depth drops the agent to depth 1 the same day.
Both are best checked at source, as a verifiable digital certificate, so that anyone relying on them sees the current status rather than an old copy.
How does a person renew?
- Watch the expiry. Diarise it, or rely on an admin view that shows expiry dates across the team.
- Take the update module. It should cover what has changed since the last certificate: product changes, new agent behaviours, new rules.
- Pass the short check. A quiz on the update and on the core skills most likely to have drifted.
- Confirm the new expiry at source. The issuer's record should show the renewed certificate.
- Update the register. Record the new expiry alongside approval rights; the AI agent certificate register template has the fields.
Renewing before expiry matters. If rights are tied to the certificate, a lapse removes them on the day, and the person's queue has to go elsewhere until they renew.
How does an agent renew?
- Re-run certification on a fresh set of the business's own cases, scored against the same floor.
- Clear every gate. Each must pass on its own: grounded, refuses, depth, escalates, scope, adversarial and stable.
- Confirm the depth. The agent's role sets the ceiling; the new evidence sets the depth; the lower wins.
- File the result. The renewed certificate and the run behind it go into the record.

What lapses if you do not renew?

In both cases nothing is deleted. The person keeps their knowledge; the agent keeps its brief. What goes is the evidence that either is fit to act now, and with it the right to act.
An example from a wealth team
A wealth manager's eight advisers hold operator certificates that expire in the same month, because they certified together. Two weeks before expiry, the team lead checks the admin view and books the update module for everyone. Seven renew in time. One adviser is on leave and lapses for four days.
