AI operator certification·Answer

How long does it take a legal secretary to get AI agent certified?

A legal secretary can reach Certified Pryme Operator in about eight weeks: 18 hours of learning, a 60-minute exam and a two-week practicum of decisions.

Count on about eight weeks. A legal secretary needs roughly four hours for Foundations and fourteen for the Operator modules and labs, then a written exam of 40 questions in 60 minutes and a two-week practicum. Firms with court deadlines and trial bundles can push that to ten if a heavy matter lands mid-plan.

What does an agent do in a law firm's support work?

Legal secretaries run diaries, prepare correspondence, assemble bundles, file documents and keep fee earners on track. Governed agents can take on a share of that, inside tight limits.

Task The agent Depth Stays with you or the fee earner
Diary and limitation dates Reads the matter file and flags deadlines 1 Confirming every court or limitation date
Client letter Drafts from the firm's precedent 2 Fee-earner approval and sending
Filing a document to the matter Files within the firm's rules 3 Anything filed to court
Bundle Assembles and indexes 2 to 3 Final check before service
Sending to the other side Never alone Held Fee-earner sign-off

The guiding rule in law is that nothing goes to a court, a client or another party without the person responsible signing it off. An agent's drafts are only ever drafts until that happens.

Where does a legal secretary need to be careful?

Confidentiality and privilege. A red line in this setting might be a draft that quotes one client's matter in a letter to another, or an email sent to an address that the agent took from an inbound message rather than the matter record. The first is a disclosure; the second relies on an external source to decide where privileged material goes.

Deadlines are the other. An agent can calculate a date, but a missed limitation date is the kind of error that cannot be undone. Treat every deadline the agent proposes as something you confirm against the court rules or the fee earner's instruction.

An eight-week route

  1. Week 1: Foundations, about four hours, including the module on ownership, data and trust.
  2. Weeks 2 to 6: Operator modules and labs, about three hours a week. Spend extra time on human review and reading the workspace.
  3. Week 6: the written exam, pass mark four in five.
  4. Weeks 7 and 8: the practicum, nineteen in twenty correct with no missed red line, signed off by a Pryme assessor.

If your firm uses Pryme, the practicum runs on its queue. If not, take it on a simulated queue in a free workspace, with cases set in legal services and in your role.

An example: a secretary we will call Beatrice

Beatrice supports two litigation partners at a mid-sized firm in Zurich. She studies on Saturday mornings and finishes the Operator modules by week six. A trial preparation week pushes her exam back by seven days.

She takes the simulated practicum. On day four she holds a drafted letter enclosing a witness statement, because the recipient's email came from a reply in the inbox, not the matter's contact record. On day nine she approves the agent's filing of correspondence to the right matter, held only because the client reference was in an old format. Her total is nine weeks.

Other roles move differently: compare a bookkeeper's timeline and a recruiter's timeline. The guide to AI operator certification covers the whole credential.

Questions people ask

Is this a legal qualification?

No. It is a professional certificate showing you can oversee governed AI agents. It does not qualify you to give legal advice or replace any legal qualification.

Will the firm let me approve agent actions?

That is the firm's decision. Some businesses tie approval rights to a current certificate; that is a practice they choose, not a universal rule.

Can I study during a trial?

It is better not to. Move the plan by a week and come back to it. The practicum in particular needs a calm fortnight.
