A lender's cost is set by how many people sit between an agent and a credit decision. Lessons can be free and certificates carry an issue fee, so most of the spend is time: loan officers, underwriters and collectors away from their queues, senior credit staff checking decisions, and the second line that challenges limits. Consumer lending needs the most.
Why lending carries a heavier training load
Lending decisions affect people's finances directly. Creditworthiness assessment and credit scoring of natural persons are listed as high-risk under Annex III of the EU AI Act. In the US, ECOA and Regulation B require specific reasons when credit is denied, including when a model is used. A lender using agents in origination must be able to show that the people reviewing agent-prepared files understood what they were approving.
Lenders also run agents across the life of a loan: application intake, document checks, affordability summaries, servicing queries, arrears contact and collections. Each stage has its own reviewers. A collections team and an underwriting team need the same core concepts but very different practice.
Who needs which track?
| People | Track | Time away | Certificate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Board, executives and the head of credit | Foundations | About 4 hours | Free badge, no expiry |
| Loan officers and underwriters who review agent-built files | Operator | About 14 hours plus a two-week practicum | Issue fee; renew every 12 months |
| Collectors who approve held arrears contacts | Operator | About 14 hours plus practicum | Issue fee; renew every 12 months |
| Credit risk and compliance staff who set limits | Operator | About 14 hours plus practicum | Issue fee; renew every 12 months |
| Agent designers | Builder | About 24 hours plus a capstone | Issue fee; renew every 12 months |
| Chief risk officer or equivalent for regulated multi-agent deployments | Architect | About 30 hours plus a capstone and board review | Issue fee; renew every 24 months |
An illustrative budget
Take a consumer lender with 25 underwriters, 15 loan officers, 30 collectors, 6 credit risk and compliance staff, 3 agent builders and a chief risk officer. Agents prepare affordability summaries and draft arrears contacts.
All 76 reviewers and second-line staff take Operator: about 1,060 hours plus practicum time. Three Builders need about 72 hours plus capstones. The chief risk officer takes Architect, about 30 hours plus capstone and board review. Twelve executives and board members take Foundations, about 48 hours. That makes 80 professional certificates to issue and renew. These are planning figures, not quotes.
The hours look large next to the agent's running cost. But the agent's cost was never just its model bill, as argued in the cost of an agent is not the model bill. Reviewer time is part of what the agent costs to run safely.
What do lenders tend to under-budget?
- The underwriter practicum. Underwriting decisions are fewer and slower, so the two weeks may need careful timing to collect enough decisions.
- Explaining declines. Officers need practice giving reasons from the record, not from the agent's wording.
- Collections vulnerability training. Collectors must learn when a held contact signals hardship. That takes calibration time.
- Renewals. Eighty renewals a year is a recurring cost, small per person but real in total.
Common errors are covered in what lenders get wrong about AI agent training, and a planning version is in the training plan template for lenders. For contrast with less regulated sectors, see the cost for universities and the cost for wealth managers.
What does it cost to skip it?
An agent's certificate lapses after 90 days, and a run that clears no depth drops it to depth 1 the same day. In a lender, that sends every document reminder and routine arrears contact back to people. Trained teams absorb that. Untrained ones fall behind on arrears contact, which harms customers, or clear held items without reading, which can mean contacting a customer in hardship with a standard demand. Either outcome costs more than the training. See training teams for AI agents for the overall approach.
Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy keeps lessons, labs and tests free; you pay to be issued a professional certificate, never to pass. Seats on paid plans include certificates for the people on them. A lender can choose to tie approval rights, depth by depth, to a current certificate, and the public register shows each certified person's credential and expiry.
Questions people ask
Should brokers or introducers be trained?
Not usually to Operator level. If they see agent-prepared material, Foundations helps them understand what the agent did and that a named person decides.
Does training change who has lending authority?
No. Lending authority stays where it was. Training qualifies people to review agent work within the authority they already hold.
Can collectors and underwriters train together?
They can share Foundations and early modules. Their supervised practice must be on their own queues, because the judgements are different.
