How to become an AI agent owner in the US

How to become an AI agent owner in the US: what owners decide, SR 11-7, ECOA and state law context, the evidence employers check, and a 90-day plan.

US companies appoint AI agent owners to answer for an agent's bounds, depth, changes and incidents in one process. In banks, the role overlaps with model ownership under SR 11-7; elsewhere it sits with operations or product managers. To become one, show review experience, evidence-based judgement and the ability to document an agent for risk teams, auditors and examiners.

What does agent ownership look like in the US?

US banks already assign owners to models, and many treat decision-support agents the same way: an inventory entry, an owner, validation and ongoing monitoring. Insurers, health systems, fintechs, retailers and outsourcers also name owners, though their governance varies widely. Sector rules shape the job: a lending agent owner thinks about adverse action reasons; a health agent owner thinks about protected health information.

Titles vary: model owner, product owner, process owner, operations manager, AI programme owner. Look for duties: approving changes, setting limits, monitoring performance and handling incidents. What an AI agent owner does explains the daily work, and what an agent owner is gives a short definition.

What does an owner decide?

You decide how far to trust the agent, on evidence from your own cases.

  • Limits. For example, a credit card servicing agent may waive a late fee once within policy at depth 3 and must hold anything more. Your limits hold or refuse actions; only the platform floor withholds actions for every agent.
  • Depth. When Attest shows the agent clearing all seven gates on your cases, you decide whether to request more depth, within the role's ceiling.
  • Model inventory and validation. In banks, you keep the agent's documentation current and work with validators.
  • Incidents. When a run clears no depth and the agent drops to depth 1, you redirect work, notify stakeholders and approve the fix.
  • Monitoring. You review the record for drift, overturns and patterns that could indicate unfair treatment.

Which jobs could you apply for?

Role (titles vary) What it involves Typical step before
Model or agent owner Accountable for agents' bounds and results Operations or product manager
Product owner Prioritises agent changes and decides depth Business analyst, product manager
Process owner Owns a process combining agents and people Operations manager
Operations manager with agent duties Runs reviewers and the agent's rhythm Team lead

What skills and certificate do US employers look for?

US hiring managers look for ownership examples on the résumé: a process you ran, a change you approved, an incident you managed, a metric you moved and can explain. In interviews, expect a scenario: "Validation flags that your agent's escalation rate differs between customer groups. What do you do?" Investigate the record, check sources and bounds, fix and retest, and document the analysis for the validator.

Certified Pryme Operator is the base certificate for owners, covering review, incidents, usage and billing and the operating rhythm. It is a professional certificate, not a government licence: a 40-question exam at four in five and a two-week practicum signed off by a Pryme assessor. Many owners add Certified Pryme Builder; Certified Pryme Architect suits those leading regulated, multi-agent deployments. All are issued through VerifyDoc.ai and checkable at source. The AI agent owner CV template shows how to adapt them for a résumé.

Which US rules shape an owner's work?

There is no single federal AI law. Interagency model risk guidance SR 11-7 shapes how banks supervised by the OCC, Federal Reserve and FDIC govern models, including ownership, validation and monitoring. ECOA and Regulation B require specific reasons when credit is denied, including when a model is used, so owners of lending agents must ensure the factors behind decisions are clear. The CFPB supervises consumer finance, and state regulators such as NYDFS add expectations.

HIPAA governs protected health information, and GLBA covers financial privacy. State privacy laws such as California's CCPA as amended by the CPRA give residents rights over their data, and Colorado has passed an AI act aimed at high-risk systems making consequential decisions. The voluntary NIST AI Risk Management Framework is a common structure for owners' documentation.

What should your 90 days look like?

Days 1 to 30. Earn the free Foundations badge. Write an ownership plan for your process, with the sector rules that shape each limit.

Days 31 to 60. Complete Operator, including the practicum, on a simulated queue in a free workspace if your employer does not use Pryme. Draft a model-inventory style record for an agent.

Days 61 to 90. Offer to own a pilot agent or apply for owner roles. How to become an AI agent owner covers the general route.

Questions people ask

Is an agent owner the same as a model owner?

In many banks, yes for that agent. Outside banking, the term may differ, but the accountability is similar.

Do owners deal with examiners?

Sometimes, in regulated firms. Your records and documentation are what examiners see, so keep them clear and current.

Does ownership require a management title?

Not always. Some firms appoint senior specialists, provided they have authority to approve changes.
