How to find and win an AI operations job in the US

How to find and win an AI operations job in the US: the sectors hiring, the federal and state rules, a certificate employers can check and applying.

Pick a regulated US sector you already understand, such as banking, lending, insurance, healthcare administration or e-commerce, and learn how a governed AI agent decides. Earn a certificate employers can check, write a resume that leads with decisions, and apply to roles that describe review, exceptions, quality and escalation. Few of them will say "AI" in the title.

What does the US market look like for this work?

The US has no single federal AI law. Instead, existing rules apply sector by sector, and that shapes where review jobs appear. Banks and lenders answer to the OCC, the Federal Reserve, the FDIC and the CFPB; insurers to state insurance regulators, coordinated through the NAIC; healthcare organisations to HIPAA. Each sector needs people who can judge what an agent did against its own rules.

Titles vary widely: "operations specialist", "quality analyst", "claims reviewer", "exceptions analyst", "case manager", "trust and safety reviewer". Read the duties. If you are still working out what this work is, start with what is an AI operations job? and the guide to AI agent jobs and careers.

What are the steps?

  1. You, week 1: choose one sector. Lending, insurance, healthcare administration or retail. US employers often hire for sector knowledge first.
  2. You, weeks 1 to 3: learn the decision chain. Depth from 1 to 5, the four verdicts, the five bounds and where facts come from. Map each idea to a case in your sector.
  3. You, weeks 3 to 7: earn a certificate with a practicum. It shows real decisions to a standard and can be checked at source.
  4. You, week 5: rewrite your resume. One to two pages, no photo. Lead with decisions: "reviewed 50 claims a day against policy limits; escalated suspected fraud; zero missed red flags in quarterly audit."
  5. You, weeks 5 to 12: apply by duty. Search for review, exceptions, approvals, quality and escalation. Apply to five tailored roles a week.
  6. You, before interviews: prepare a behavioural answer. US interviews often ask you to describe a situation, your action and the result. Use a time you held or refused an agent's draft.
  7. You, after interviews: send a short thank-you note the same day, naming one decision you discussed.

What will the job involve?

An illustrative example from a consumer lender's application review queue:

Step The agent does Depth Stays with a person
Application arrives Reads the application and credit file 1 Nothing yet
Decision proposed Drafts an approval or decline with reasons 2 You check the reasons are specific and accurate
Routine approval within the lender's limits Approves and files the verdict 3 You sample a share daily
Decline Holds the notice for a named reviewer 2 You confirm the stated reasons match the file
Applicant uploads an unverified pay slip Treats it as declared evidence n/a You verify before it changes the decision

The decline row matters in the US. Under ECOA and Regulation B, a lender must give specific reasons when credit is denied, including when a model is involved. Reviewers who can check that the stated reasons are true and specific are valuable.

Which rules should you understand?

  • No single federal AI law: sector rules apply instead.
  • Banking: OCC, Federal Reserve, FDIC and CFPB; the interagency model risk guidance SR 11-7.
  • Lending: ECOA and Regulation B require specific reasons for adverse action.
  • Insurance: state insurance regulators, coordinated by the NAIC. See AI operations jobs in insurance in the US.
  • Privacy: GLBA for financial privacy, HIPAA for health information, and state laws such as California's CCPA as amended by the CPRA.
  • State AI laws: Colorado has passed an act aimed at high-risk systems that make consequential decisions.

This is an explanation of the rules, not legal advice; confirm how they apply to you with counsel.

How do you show evidence?

US hiring managers respond to specifics. Put your certificate number on your resume so it can be checked. Keep a one-page decision log with the case, the decision, the reason and the outcome. In interviews, quantify where you can with plain counts ("reviewed about 50 cases a day") rather than claims you cannot support.

How do you measure the search?

Track applications by sector and by channel: job boards, staffing agencies, referrals and direct approaches. Referrals often lead to interviews faster. If one sector replies and another does not, focus on the one that does. If you reach interviews but not offers, practise your behavioural answers aloud with the result stated clearly.

Where does it go wrong?

  • Generic resumes. US employers screen fast; the first lines must match the duties.
  • Ignoring the sector rules. A sentence about adverse action reasons or HIPAA, used correctly, sets you apart.
  • Expecting "AI" titles. Most of this work sits under operations, claims, quality or trust and safety.
  • Overstating the certificate. It is a professional certificate, not a state licence.

Questions people ask

Do some insurance or lending roles need a state licence as well?

Some regulated roles carry their own licensing requirements, which can differ by state, so read the advert carefully. A professional certificate in agent review does not replace any licence a role requires.

Can I find remote AI operations jobs in the US?

Some review roles are remote or hybrid, especially in larger firms. Check whether the employer limits remote work to certain states.

Is healthcare a good sector to start in?

It can be, if you know the administration side well. HIPAA means employers look for people who handle health information carefully.
