How to move from claims handler to AI agent reviewer

How to move from claims handler to AI agent reviewer in insurance: the claims skills that transfer, what to learn, the certificate and how to apply.

A claims handler's daily work, checking cover, weighing evidence, settling within authority and spotting what does not fit, is the work of an AI agent reviewer. The move means judging an agent's prepared claims instead of building each file yourself. Learn how governed agents decide, practise on real or simulated claims, earn a certificate employers can check, then apply.

What does the move look like in practice?

Insurers are putting agents on first notification of loss, cover checks, document chasing and simple settlements. The agent reads the claim and the policy, drafts the cover decision and the letter, and settles small claims inside the insurer's limits. What it does not do alone is settle above its authority, decline cover on an ambiguous clause, or pay on evidence it cannot trust. Those reach you.

Take a claims handler we will call Tomas at a mid-sized home insurer. In his old role he built every escape-of-water file himself. In review, the agent has already gathered the photos, checked the policy and drafted a settlement. Tomas reads the draft, notices that the damage started before the policy's start date according to the plumber's report, and holds the claim with a one-line reason. That reason later becomes a rule in the agent's brief. This is an illustrative example, but it is the shape of the job. The guide to AI agent jobs and careers shows the roles around it.

Which claims skills carry over?

  • Reading a policy wording. Exclusions, conditions and limits are where agents most often need a person.
  • Settlement authority. You already work within a limit. Agents work within one too, and the lowest bound decides.
  • Fraud indicators. Late notification, inconsistent dates, a story that changes. Reviewers catch what a scoring rule misses.
  • Claimant care. You know how to decline cover without making a complaint inevitable.
  • File discipline. You know a claim must be reconstructable later. Every verdict an agent makes is filed for the same reason.

What are the steps?

  1. You, weeks 1 to 2: learn the agent vocabulary. Depth, the four verdicts and provenance. The policy library is sealed; the claimant's account is declared; a contractor's emailed invoice is external.
  2. You, weeks 2 to 4: re-read your last twenty files. For each, write what an agent could have prepared and where you would have held it. This becomes your interview material.
  3. You, weeks 3 to 5: volunteer for a pilot. How to volunteer for an AI agent pilot as a claims handler explains how to raise it with your team manager.
  4. You, weeks 4 to 8: complete a practicum. Two weeks of review decisions to a measured standard.
  5. You, weeks 6 to 9: earn a certificate employers can check.
  6. You, week 8: rewrite your CV. Replace "handled 40 open claims" with "reviewed and settled claims within authority; held cover decisions on ambiguous exclusions; referred suspected fraud with written reasons."
  7. You, weeks 8 to 14: apply. Target claims quality, claims operations and review roles. Use the cover letter template for claims handlers.

What will your queue look like?

An illustrative home insurance claims queue:

Step The agent does Depth Stays with a person
Claim notified online Reads the form, policy and claims history 1 Nothing yet
Cover check Drafts a cover decision with the clause relied on 2 You check the clause and the facts
Small claim within the insurer's limit Settles and files the verdict 3 You sample a share
Claim above authority or with fraud indicators Holds for a named handler 4 You decide or refer to the fraud team
Contractor's invoice arrives by email Treated as external evidence n/a You verify before it supports a payment

What evidence does each step leave?

Your file review leaves worked examples. The pilot and practicum leave a decision log with reasons. The certificate leaves a number an employer can check at source. Bring the strongest three decisions to interview: one settlement you approved, one you held and one you declined, each with the clause and the reason.

How do you know it is working?

Interview questions change. Instead of "how many claims did you handle?", you hear "what would you do if the agent settled a claim the policy excludes?". Your practicum accuracy holds for the full fortnight. Replies come from claims quality and operations teams, not only from handler roles.

Where does it usually go wrong?

  • Re-doing the file. Reviewers judge the agent's preparation; they do not rebuild every claim from scratch.
  • Treating the claimant's account as proof. It is declared, useful but unverified.
  • Under-explaining declines. A decline without a clear clause and reason is a complaint waiting to happen, from an agent or a person.
  • Skipping fraud. Your fraud instinct is one of your strongest selling points. Use it.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy's Operator track matches claims review closely, with module tests set in insurance. The written exam is 40 questions in 60 minutes; the practicum is two weeks of decisions to nineteen in twenty correct with no missed red line, signed off by a Pryme assessor. An insurer can make approval rights depend on a current certificate, which it can check through VerifyDoc.ai.

Questions people ask

Will claims handler jobs disappear?

Agents take on more preparation and simple settlements. Insurers still need people to decide complex, high-value and disputed claims, and to review the agent's work.

Do I need to know about life and health insurance rules?

Only if you work in those lines. In the EU, risk assessment and pricing for life and health insurance is listed as high-risk under the AI Act, which makes review especially important there.

Can loss adjusters make the same move?

Yes. Adjusters bring strong evidence skills. They often review the agent's settlement proposals on larger or complex claims.
