Paralegals joining a firm where agents draft chronologies, summaries and first-draft letters need a fortnight built around one habit: checking every fact against the document it came from. Week one teaches what the agent reads and drafts, and where matter boundaries sit. Week two brings live drafts, checked by a senior paralegal or the supervising lawyer.
What does the legal support agent do?
In a law firm or in-house legal team that runs agents, the agent typically reads documents within one matter and drafts: chronologies from correspondence, summaries of contracts and leases, comparisons of clauses against the firm's standard, and first-draft letters from approved precedents (depth 1 and 2). Nothing goes to a client or opponent without a person. Legal judgement stays with the qualified lawyer responsible for the matter.
A new paralegal's day is therefore more checking and less first drafting. That sounds easier and is not: checking well means knowing what the agent tends to get wrong. How the day shifts is set out in what changes in a paralegal's day when AI agents arrive. The practice manager or senior paralegal owns onboarding, using the new joiner induction template for teams with AI agents as a base.
How do the two weeks run?
- Day 1. Person (practice manager): explains matter boundaries. The agent reads only the documents of the matter it is working on. Seeing another client's document in a draft is an incident, reported at once.
- Day 1 to 2. Person (new paralegal): learns the precedent bank the agent drafts from, and how withdrawn precedents are retired.
- Day 2 to 3. Agent, depth 2: drafts chronologies and summaries on live matters, checked by the senior paralegal while the new paralegal follows each correction.
- Day 4 to 5. Person (new paralegal): checks closed-matter drafts against the source documents, with known errors seeded in: a received date used instead of a sent date, a missed side letter, a withdrawn precedent.
- Week 2. Person (new paralegal): checks live drafts, with the senior paralegal reviewing before anything goes to the lawyer.
- Week 2. Person (new paralegal): records reasons on every correction, separating firm-wide issues from matter-specific facts.
- End of week 2. Person (supervising lawyer): signs off the paralegal to check drafts for their review without a second paralegal.
| Step | The agent does | Depth | Stays with a person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Read | Matter documents only | 1 | Granting access |
| Chronology | Drafts from correspondence | 2 | Checking every entry |
| Summary | Drafts from contracts | 2 | Checking clauses and side documents |
| Letter | Drafts from precedent | 2 | Lawyer approval, sending |
| Advice | Nothing | none | Qualified lawyer |
What does a new paralegal check every time?
Dates. Sent or received, signed or effective, the date on the letter or the date it was emailed. Chronologies live or die on dates.
Related documents. A lease summary that misses a side letter or deed of variation is wrong, however accurate the summary of the lease itself.
The precedent. Is it the current version? If the agent used a withdrawn one, report it so the knowledge team retires it from the agent's sources.
The jurisdiction. Limitation periods, formalities and terms differ. If the matter is governed by a different law from the firm's default, check that the draft reflects it.
Privilege markings. Documents marked privileged or without prejudice need care. The paralegal checks that the agent has carried those markings through, and has not quoted privileged content into a draft meant for another party.
How should corrections be recorded?
With a reason, and without client facts in the reason. "Chronology used received date rather than sent date" is a firm-wide lesson the agent owner can bank. "In this matter the break clause was varied" is a matter fact; it belongs in the matter file. Learning to separate the two keeps confidential information out of the agent's brief.
Which controls and evidence should onboarding leave?
- Seeded-error exercise. Evidence: which errors the paralegal found.
- Checked drafts in week two. Evidence: both names on each.
- Matter boundary briefing. Evidence: the paralegal's acknowledgement and the incident route.
- Reasons separated by scope. Evidence: reason codes by paralegal.
What should the practice manager measure?
Errors the new paralegal caught that the senior paralegal would have caught. Errors that reached the lawyer. Withdrawn precedents reported. Matter-boundary incidents, which should be none. Time per check, expected to fall.
Where does it usually go wrong?
Reading the draft, not the documents. A new paralegal reads the chronology, finds it plausible and passes it on. The seeded-error exercise teaches them to open the source.
Client facts in reasons. Paralegals write detailed notes by habit.
Treating precedent errors as one-offs. The same withdrawn precedent will be used again until it is retired. Report it once to the knowledge team, then check that it has gone.
Caseworkers face a similar confidentiality discipline with personal files, as the plan for a new caseworker shows, and collections teams handle disputes that often reach legal, covered in the plan for a new collections agent. The wider approach is in training teams for AI agents.
Where the Academy fits
Pryme Intelligence Academy's Foundations track gives a new paralegal the essentials in about four hours: why agents are governed, the decision chain and what the record shows. Paralegals who check agent drafts daily go on to the Operator track, where module tests are set in their own industry and role, and lessons can be read or listened to as audio.
Questions people ask
Can a paralegal send an agent-drafted letter?
Only where the firm's rules allow a paralegal to send that kind of letter, and after checking it. Letters carrying legal advice go through the lawyer.
What if the agent cites a document the paralegal cannot find?
Stop and check. It may be in the matter under a different name, or it may be an error. Never pass on a citation you cannot verify.
How long before a new paralegal works without a second check?
Two weeks for routine drafts in one practice area is common. Complex matters and new areas take longer.
