The new AI operations jobs in insurance

The new AI operations jobs in insurance review held claims, fraud referrals and underwriting exceptions, and own the agents. Here is who is best placed for each.

Insurers running governed AI agents need people to decide held claims, review fraud referrals, handle underwriting exceptions, check customer letters and own each agent's bounds. Claims handlers, underwriting assistants, fraud investigators and complaints staff are best placed. Insurance already runs on judgement about evidence and cover, and that judgement is exactly what agents hand back to people.

Which insurance work are agents taking on?

Insurance has a lot of structured, document-heavy work: first notification of loss, gathering evidence, checking cover against the policy wording, calculating settlements within authority, drafting letters and answering policyholders' questions. Agents can do much of this inside bounds.

A claims agent might read the notification, pull the policy from the policy library, which is sealed, gather photos and estimates from the customer, which are declared, and draft a settlement. If the amount is within the insurer's limit and the agent has been certified to that depth on the insurer's own past claims, it may settle routine cases. Anything bigger, unusual or suspicious is held. Because settlements move money, many insurers keep them at depth 4 and held for a person, at least until the evidence supports more.

What are the new jobs, and how do they differ?

Role The core decision Best previous experience
Claims exceptions handler Approve, adjust or decline a held claim Claims handler, loss adjuster's assistant
Fraud referral reviewer Decide whether a flagged claim needs investigation or is fine Fraud investigator, experienced claims handler
Underwriting referral reviewer Accept, load or decline a risk the agent could not price within rules Underwriting assistant, broker support
Customer letter reviewer Check drafted decline and settlement letters for accuracy and fairness Complaints handler, claims handler
Policy wording keeper Keep the wordings and guidance the agent reads current and clear Technical claims or product staff
Agent owner Set the agent's bounds and argue for depth on evidence Claims team leader, operations manager

Job titles vary between insurers and between markets. A "claims technician" or "claims quality analyst" advert with exceptions and approval duties may be one of these roles.

Why are claims handlers such a good fit?

Claims handlers spend their days weighing evidence against wording. They know that a builder's estimate for a roof repair after a storm should look a certain way, and that a phone receipt dated after the loss is a warning sign. That is the knowledge an agent lacks at the edges.

Take a claims handler we will call Lewis at a regional home insurer. The agent holds an escape-of-water claim because the estimate is twice the usual figure for the postcode. Lewis reads the photos and sees the damage has spread to two floors, which explains the cost. He approves with a note. An hour later, the agent holds a similar claim with a lower estimate but a photo whose metadata predates the policy start. Lewis refers it to the fraud team. Both decisions are filed with his name and reasons.

What rules shape these jobs?

Insurance is closely supervised everywhere, and AI raises extra duties. Under the EU AI Act, risk assessment and pricing for life and health insurance is listed as high-risk in Annex III, which brings human oversight and record-keeping duties to those uses.

In Australia, APRA supervises insurers and its CPS 230 standard requires operational risk management, including over critical service providers; ASIC oversees conduct. See AI operations jobs in insurance in Australia. In Singapore, MAS sets the FEAT principles on fairness, ethics, accountability and transparency in the use of AI and data analytics, and its Technology Risk Management Guidelines; see AI operations jobs in insurance in Singapore. In the US, state insurance regulators supervise insurers, with the NAIC coordinating.

How does insurance compare with logistics and payments?

Insurance and payments share the problem of deciding whether to release money on uncertain evidence; see the new AI operations jobs in payments. Insurance and logistics share claims work too, since damaged and lost goods lead to cargo claims; our article on the new AI operations jobs in logistics covers that side. What marks insurance out is the policy wording. A reviewer must read cover as precisely as a lawyer reads a contract, and the wording keeper role exists because agents are only as good as the wordings they read.

What is the trade-off?

These roles remove much of the routine claims processing that once filled a handler's day. What remains is harder: borderline cover, suspected fraud, distressed customers. The work is more demanding and more exposed, since your decisions are recorded and may be challenged by complaint or audit.

There is also a risk for people who stay in pure processing roles. As agents earn depth on routine claims, insurers may need fewer people for simple cases. The safer move is towards exceptions, fraud and quality, where judgement is the job. Pryme Intelligence Academy's Operator track trains those review duties, with module tests set in insurance cases for people who work in insurance.

How do you move into one of these roles?

Inside an insurer, ask to review the agent's held claims or to help maintain the wordings it reads. Keep a log of your decisions and reasons. From outside, emphasise any experience weighing evidence and deciding against rules: benefits assessment, complaints, retail returns. Our guide on how to get into AI operations in insurance covers routes, and the AI agent jobs and careers guide shows how insurance roles fit with others.

Questions people ask

Will agents settle claims without any person?

For small routine claims within an insurer's limits, a certified agent may settle at depth 3 or 4 if the insurer allows it. Larger, unusual or suspicious claims are held for a person in most governed setups.

Is fraud review a separate career?

It can be. Many insurers keep a dedicated fraud team. The fraud referral reviewer role sits between the agent and that team, deciding which flags deserve investigation.

Do I need insurance qualifications?

Some employers prefer them, especially for underwriting. Claims and quality review roles more often look for experience and sound decisions. Read the duties in the advert.
