Online retailers that run governed agents create a handful of new people-side jobs: reviewers for refunds, returns and goodwill; reviewers for product listings and customer content; fraud and chargeback reviewers; AI operations analysts who tune the agents; and agent owners who answer for them. Most are filled from customer service, trading and operations teams.
What do agents do in an online shop?
Agents in e-commerce usually handle high-volume, rule-bound work:
- Customer contacts: order status, delivery changes, returns labels.
- Refunds and goodwill within limits, with the rest held or refused.
- Product content: drafting descriptions, attributes and translations from supplier data.
- Reviews and questions: moderating customer reviews and answering product questions.
- Fraud screening of orders and returns, flagging patterns.
Each produces held items and records. The jobs grow out of those.
Which jobs grow around e-commerce agents?
| Job | What you do | Typical background |
|---|---|---|
| Refunds and returns reviewer | Decide refunds over the limit, damage disputes, policy exceptions | Customer service representatives, returns staff |
| Content reviewer | Check agent-drafted listings for accuracy, safety claims and compliance | Merchandising assistants, copywriters |
| Fraud and chargeback reviewer | Decide held orders and suspicious returns, respond to disputes | Fraud analysts, payments staff |
| AI operations analyst | Read the record, find where agents over-hold or under-hold, propose rule changes | Customer insight analysts, operations analysts |
| AI agent owner | Answer for an agent's scope, sources and limits | Customer service managers, trading managers |
Builders who design and certify the agents may sit in a central team or with a platform provider. Job titles vary widely in e-commerce, so search for the duties.
What does a content reviewer catch?
Take a content reviewer we will call Bea at an online retailer selling children's products. The content agent drafts a listing from a supplier's spreadsheet and holds it, because the rules say anything mentioning safety must be checked. The draft says the cot mattress "meets all safety standards". The supplier's data is external: it arrived from outside and has not been verified.
Bea checks the certificate the supplier uploaded and finds it covers a different model. She removes the claim, asks the buyer to request the right certificate, and records why. A wrong safety claim on a child's product is the kind of mistake that is hard to undo, which is why a person stays on it.
What stays with people in e-commerce?
- Refunds and goodwill above the retailer's limits.
- Anything involving product safety or legal claims.
- Upset or vulnerable customers.
- Decisions to block a customer or cancel orders for suspected fraud.
- Changes to policies, prices and promotions.
Some actions are refused for every agent at the platform floor, which Pryme calls withheld; most limits, though, are set by the retailer itself.
Which controls make e-commerce agents trustworthy?
- Provenance labels on every fact: the order system is sealed; a customer's photo is declared; supplier data is external until checked.
- The depth each action needs: answering a question and issuing a refund are different permissions.
- Expiring certification: an agent's certificate lapses after 90 days.
- An append-only record of every verdict, which supports chargeback responses and complaints.
How do you get into these jobs?
If you already handle refunds, content or fraud, you are close. Read adverts for "exceptions", "quality", "approvals" and "escalation", and describe your decisions rather than your volume. The new AI operations jobs in e-commerce goes deeper on each role. Country detail is in AI operations jobs in e-commerce in Australia and in Singapore. Payments roles overlap heavily; see AI agent jobs in payments. The guide to AI agent jobs and careers covers the full range.
Questions people ask
Do small online shops have these jobs?
Usually as part of someone's existing role. In a small shop the owner or one customer service person may review everything the agent holds. The duties exist even without the title.
Is marketplace seller support different?
Yes. Marketplaces also review seller-facing decisions, such as listing removals and payout holds. Those decisions affect a business's income, so reviewers there need careful judgement.
Which role is the best entry point?
Refunds and returns review, for most people. It builds the habits of checking sources, deciding within policy and recording a reason, which every other role uses.
