AI literacy and certification·Answer

What AI agent training does a law firm board need?

A law firm board needs AI agent training on depth, certification, the record and accountability, framed around the duty of supervision partners hold.

Law firm boards need literacy that maps onto a duty partners already carry: supervision. Directors must understand how far each agent may act, how that authority is earned and expires, what the record shows about any piece of work, and which lawyer answers for it. With that, the board can set policy on client confidentiality, citations and client money.

Why does supervising agents look like supervising juniors?

A partner supervising a trainee checks the work, knows what the trainee may sign and decides what goes to the client. Agents need the same supervision, with two differences. Their authority is defined precisely, per capability, as a depth: 1 read, 2 draft, 3 routine work within bounds, 4 money or hard-to-undo actions, 5 coordinating other agents. And it expires: certificates lapse after 90 days, and a run that clears no depth drops the agent to depth 1 the same day.

A board that understands those two points can write a supervision policy for agents that partners will follow, because it looks like the one they already know.

What must partners on the board understand?

  • Earned depth. The role sets a ceiling, certification on the firm's own matters sets the depth, the lower wins.
  • The four verdicts. Allowed, held for a named lawyer, refused as outside bounds, withheld at the platform floor.
  • Provenance. Facts arrive sealed from the firm's own systems, signed by a named party, declared by a client or witness, or external. Each carries different weight.
  • The record. Every verdict is filed append-only. The firm can show which sources a draft used and who approved it.
  • Accountability. No agent signs. The supervising lawyer owns the output.

What stays with lawyers?

Work Agent Stays with a lawyer
Conflict checks Searches and reports at depth 1 Clearing the conflict
Document review Tags and summarises at depth 1 to 2 Privilege calls and conclusions
Drafting letters and contracts Drafts at depth 2 Advice, sending and signature
Billing narratives Drafts at depth 2 Approving the bill
Payments from the client account Prepares and holds at depth 4, if certified Releasing each one

Where does provenance meet privilege and citations?

Two risks keep law firm boards awake. The first is a draft that cites authority that does not exist or does not say what the draft claims. Provenance is the control: a governed agent knows whether a proposition came from the firm's sealed precedent bank, a signed court record or an external web page, and the reviewing lawyer can see which. Training should teach reviewers to check the source, not the polish.

The second is confidentiality. An agent must only read the matters its role allows, and its sources should be scoped per client. Firms with offices abroad will meet other data laws; a Dubai office, for example, falls under the regime described in the UAE Personal Data Protection Law guide.

What should the board put in place before agents touch client matters?

  1. A policy listing which capabilities may run at which depth, by practice area.
  2. Certified approvers for every held action, with rights tied to a current credential.
  3. A supervision rule that reviewers check sources, not just text.
  4. A readiness assessment for the law firm, and a plan to roll out AI agent training across the firm.

An accountancy firm board faces close parallels. The full model is in AI literacy and certification for people who work with agents.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy's Foundations track gives partners the board-level concepts in about four hours. Lawyers who release held actions take Operator, which ends in a written exam and a two-week practicum of real review decisions, signed off by a Pryme assessor.

Questions people ask

Can an agent send a letter to a client?

Only within templates and bounds the firm has certified, at depth 3, and never for advice. Anything substantive is drafted at depth 2 and sent by a lawyer.

Does using an agent change professional responsibility?

No. The supervising lawyer remains responsible for the work. The record makes that supervision visible.

Should every partner be certified?

Every partner needs literacy. Partners who personally release agent actions, such as client-account payments, should hold a current approver credential.
