What are red lines in AI agent work?

Red lines in AI agent work are actions an agent must never take and a reviewer must never approve. Learn the three kinds and why employers test them first.

Red lines are the actions an AI agent must never take on its own and a reviewer must never approve, however convincing the case. Paying a new payee on an emailed instruction is one; clearing a sanctions match without evidence is another. Holding them every time is the core of oversight work.

Where do red lines come from?

Red lines sit at three levels, and knowing which is which tells you who can change them.

  1. The platform floor. Some actions are withheld for every agent at every depth, on purpose, even though the action exists and works. Reversing a settled payment on the platform's own rail is an example. No customer can switch this on.
  2. The business's own limits. Each employer sets its own lines: never change a payee from an email, never pay out a claim with an injury element without a handler, never send a document outside the company domain. An agent meeting one of these gets a refused or held verdict.
  3. The reviewer's professional lines. Things you must never approve, even when the agent has held the case correctly and the pressure is on: approving without reading the source, clearing a fraud flag because the customer is angry, signing off a decision outside your own authority.

The first two are written into the system. The third lives in your judgement, and it is the one employers most want to see.

What do red lines look like in different jobs?

Work Typical red line
Payments and finance No payment or payee change authorised by an external claim, such as an email or invoice text
Banking onboarding No sanctions or watch-list match cleared without evidence
Insurance claims No claim declined without a person and a reason tied to the policy wording
Healthcare admin No clinical advice; no health data disclosed before identity is confirmed
Collections No contact that pressures a customer flagged as vulnerable
Any role No action outside the agent's role scope, whatever the request says

A good rule of thumb: a red line protects against harm that is serious, hard to undo, or both.

Why are red lines different from ordinary limits?

An ordinary limit is a threshold that moves with evidence. An agent that proves itself on a business's own cases may earn a higher depth, and the business may raise its limits. Red lines do not move with performance. An agent that has handled ten thousand payee changes perfectly still may not authorise one on an emailed instruction.

That matters for how you are judged. In the practicum for Certified Pryme Operator, the standard is nineteen in twenty decisions correct and no missed red line. A reviewer who is right on nearly every case but approves one red-line breach fails, because one breach can cost more than all the correct decisions save.

What does holding a red line look like?

Take a reviewer we will call Kofi at an invoice finance firm. A held payment of 40,000 to a client's supplier arrives with a note from the agent: "Payee change confirmed by supplier letter." The letter is a PDF attached to an email. Everything else about the case is clean, the client is valued, and the client's finance director has phoned twice asking for the funds today.

Kofi declines. His reason reads: "Payee change supported only by emailed letter, an external source; confirm by phone with supplier on number held before the change." The finance director is annoyed. The next morning the supplier confirms it never changed its bank. The red line did its job only because Kofi held it under pressure.

How do employers test red lines?

Expect scenario questions and work sample tests in which a red-line case is hidden among routine ones, often with time pressure or a sympathetic story attached. Employers want to see that you spot it, decline it and write a reason. Red lines are the first thing an employer will test explains why; what a reviewer needs to know about red lines goes deeper on the reviewer's side; and what a work sample test is shows the format. Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy teaches red lines from the Foundations track onwards, alongside depth and the decision chain. In the Operator track, the practicum is two weeks of review decisions signed off by an assessor, and a single missed red line fails it. People without a job using Pryme practise on a simulated queue in a free workspace.

Questions people ask

Can a business remove a red line?

A business can change its own limits, including lines it set itself. It cannot switch off actions withheld at the platform floor. Reviewers should know which kind they are dealing with.

What should I do if a manager tells me to approve a red-line case?

Record the instruction and your concern, and escalate through the proper route. Approving it under your own name means the decision is filed as yours.

Are red lines the same in every country?

No. Some come from law and differ by market; others are the employer's own policy. The habit of holding them is the same everywhere.
