AI agent jobs and careers·Answer

What does an AI agent reviewer job look like for a former QA tester?

A former QA tester reviewing AI agents decides held cases, hunts patterns and turns each failure into a test case the agent must pass to keep acting.

Half queue, half test lab. A software company's agent triages bug reports, answers account questions and issues small credits. You decide what it holds, but your bigger value is spotting patterns across decisions and turning each failure into a reproducible case. Former QA testers think in edge cases and regressions, and governed agents are certified on exactly that.

What does the agent do at a software company?

The usual uses are customer-facing. The agent reads incoming support tickets and bug reports, matches them to known issues, drafts replies, and routes genuine defects to engineering with reproduction steps. It answers billing questions from the account record and, once certified, issues small service credits within the company's limits.

Each of those needs its own depth. Reading tickets is depth 1. Drafting replies is depth 2. Issuing a credit within bounds is depth 3. A refund above the limit, which moves money, is refused: the agent may only draft it for a person. Closing a customer's account is refused by the company's own limits.

What does a reviewer do with the queue?

The daily queue looks familiar to anyone who has triaged defects:

  1. Held credits and refunds: check the account, the incident and the policy, then decide.
  2. Replies the agent was unsure of: approve, rewrite or send to a specialist.
  3. Bug reports the agent could not match: confirm whether they are new defects and route them.
  4. Sampling: pick a set of decisions the agent made alone and check them against the policy.
  5. Pattern notes: write up anything that repeats, with enough detail for someone to reproduce it.

Steps four and five are where a QA background pays off. A queue shows you what the agent knew it was unsure about. Sampling shows you what it got wrong with confidence.

What does a regression look like in an agent?

Take a reviewer we will call Marek at a software company. After a change to the agent's brief, he samples service credits for an outage. Three customers on annual plans have been credited at the monthly rate, so they received about a twelfth of what policy says.

Marek treats it as a regression. He writes ten cases covering monthly, annual and mid-term plan changes, with the expected credit for each, and sends them to the agent's owner. The owner pauses the credit capability. Before it can act again, the agent must pass a certification run that replays real cases against a floor, and Marek's cases go into that set. Credits stay at drafting only until it passes. He also logs the three affected accounts for correction.

What does the record give you?

Every verdict is filed in an append-only record: the agent's action, its sources, the verdict and which bound decided. For a tester, this is a gift. You can trace any decision back to its inputs, reproduce it, and see whether a fix changed the outcome.

Your own work is judged from the same record. Reviewers are assessed on correct decisions and on red lines not missed. A credit wrongly approved counts against you; a pattern caught early counts for you.

What carries over from QA, and what is new?

Your test thinking carries over completely: boundaries, equivalence classes, regressions after change, and reports that someone else can act on. So does your patience with repetitive checking and your distrust of a green result you have not seen yourself.

What is new is that the system under test makes judgement calls, not deterministic outputs, and that some decisions are about people's money. You will also learn the vocabulary of depth, provenance and verdicts. The guide to AI agent jobs and careers sets out the roles. A former QA tester often moves quickly into analyst or builder work; see how to become an AI operations analyst as a former QA tester. The first step is in how to move from QA tester to AI agent reviewer.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy's Operator track teaches review, reading the workspace and handling failures. A QA tester may find the Builder track a better fit later, because it covers designing, training and certifying agents, ending in a capstone agent certified to depth 2 or higher. Start with the free Foundations badge either way.

Questions people ask

Is this just manual testing under another name?

No. Testing checks a system before release. Review decides live cases with real customers and real money, and also feeds the tests. The two overlap, but review carries accountability for each decision.

Do I need to write code?

Not for review. Builder work involves designing agent briefs and test sets, which is closer to test design than to programming.

How do I present this to employers?

Lead with patterns you found and the impact of catching them early, in round terms. The cover letter template for QA testers applying for AI operations jobs gives a structure.
