Law firm AI literacy comes down to three habits. Check the source before the prose. Know which matters an agent may see. Know what you are allowed to release. Every lawyer, paralegal and business services colleague who works beside agents needs those habits, tested and recorded, and the people who release held actions need certified competence.
Why check the source before the prose?
Legal drafting rewards fluency, and agents are fluent. The risk is a draft that reads well and cites authority that does not say what the draft claims. A governed agent stamps every fact with its provenance: sealed by the firm's own systems, such as the precedent bank or document management system; signed by a named party, such as a court record or a counterparty's executed document; declared by a client or witness; or external, such as a web page.
A literate associate reads the provenance first. A proposition resting on an external web page needs checking against a primary source before it goes near a client. A clause lifted from the firm's sealed precedent bank needs checking for fit, not existence. That order of review is the core of legal AI literacy.
Why do matter walls belong in literacy training?
Firms separate matters for confidentiality and conflicts. Agents must respect the same walls, and that is a matter of sources: an agent working on one client's matter should read only that matter's documents. Literacy here means fee earners understand that an agent's sources are scoped, know how to request access for a new matter, and recognise when an agent refuses to read something because it sits outside its scope. That refusal is the wall working, not a fault.
What does literacy mean by role?
| Role | Literacy in practice |
|---|---|
| Partners | Know what has been delegated, at which depth, and supervise agent output as they would a junior's |
| Associates | Check provenance, read the verdict on any held action, and own every draft they send |
| Trainees and paralegals | Recognise declared and external sources and flag them |
| Knowledge lawyers | Keep the precedent bank current, since it is the agent's sealed source |
| Business services | Release held client-account payments only after verifying the payee |
Depth frames all of this: 1 read, 2 draft for a lawyer to send, 3 routine work within bounds, 4 money or hard-to-undo actions, 5 coordinating other agents. Agent certificates lapse after 90 days, and a run that clears no depth drops the agent to depth 1 the same day.
What does a literate review look like?
Take an agent drafting a letter before action for a commercial client. The associate opens the draft. The facts of the dispute are declared by the client; the contract terms come from a signed, executed copy; one point of law rests on an external article. The associate replaces that citation with the primary authority, checks the contract terms against the executed copy, and confirms the client's account with the instructing partner. Then she sends it. The record shows the draft, the sources and her approval.
How do clients check a firm's competence?
Clients may ask how a firm governs agents on their matters. The strongest answer is a credential the client can check for itself. Checking a certificate at source means verifying it with the issuer, by number or QR code, rather than trusting a copy; a lapsed or revoked certificate shows as such. Pryme Intelligence Academy issues its certificates through VerifyDoc.ai on that basis.
Keep a training record per person and join it to the append-only record of agent verdicts. What law firms get wrong about AI agent training covers the common mistakes. Accountancy firms face a close parallel, and universities a similar concern with sources. The full model is in AI literacy and certification for people who work with agents.
Questions people ask
Do partners need the same training as associates?
Partners need the same core literacy plus a clear view of what they have delegated. Those who personally release client-account payments need an approver credential.
Can an agent send correspondence on a matter?
Only within templates and bounds the firm has certified. Anything that gives advice or takes a position should be drafted for a lawyer to send.
How should knowledge lawyers be trained?
On how agents use the precedent bank as a sealed source, so they understand that an out-of-date precedent becomes an out-of-date draft.
