The agentic operating system·Definition

What is an agentic workflow?

An agentic workflow is a process where AI agents decide and do some steps within bounds. How it works, and how it differs from plain workflow automation.

An agentic workflow is a business process in which some steps are carried out by AI agents that decide how to do them, while other steps stay fixed or stay with people. The workflow sets the order and the handoffs. The agents handle the steps that need judgement, such as reading a document, choosing a reply or deciding what is missing.

How does an agentic workflow differ from a fixed one?

A fixed workflow knows every branch in advance: if the form is complete, route to team A; if not, return it. An agentic workflow allows some steps to be open-ended. The agent reads an unstructured request, decides which of several paths fits, and may call tools to gather what it needs before moving on.

That flexibility is the point. Most real processes have steps nobody could draw a full flowchart for, like working out what a customer's long email is about. Agents can handle those steps. The workflow keeps them inside a known shape.

Why does it matter once agents act?

Because the workflow is where people assume control sits. Many teams add a human approval step in the flow and treat the job as done. But an agent inside the flow may reach systems the flowchart never shows, through its tools. If the approval step is a box in one workflow, it protects only that workflow, and only if every route passes through it.

That is why we argue human gates belong in the platform, not in each workflow. The gate should trigger on the action, wherever it comes from.

How does an agentic workflow run in practice?

The process owner maps the steps and marks which ones an agent will handle and at what depth: reading, drafting for a person to send, or executing routine work within bounds. Each agent step has its own brief and certificate. Handoffs between steps carry the facts and their provenance. Any action that needs a person is held until a named person releases it. The mechanics are covered in how to add a human gate to an agent workflow.

What does that look like in an example?

A housing association handles repair requests. A fixed step logs each request. An agent reads the description and photos, classifies the repair, checks the tenancy record and decides urgency. A second fixed step books routine repairs with approved contractors. Anything the agent marks as a possible safety issue, such as damp near electrics, skips the queue and goes to a named surveyor. The agent decides the classification; it does not decide what counts as safe.

How is an agentic workflow different from an AI agent or workflow automation?

An AI agent is one actor with a role and tools. An agentic workflow is a process that may use several agents, fixed steps and people. The comparison is set out in how an agentic workflow differs from an AI agent. Traditional workflow automation runs only fixed steps; see how an AI agent differs from workflow automation. Where Pryme fits

Pryme checks each agent action in a workflow against the agent's own bounds and holds anything that needs a person, wherever the action comes from. The gate lives in the platform, so a new route through the workflow cannot skip it, and every verdict is filed with the bound that decided it. See the governed agentic operating system, explained.

Questions people ask

Who owns an agentic workflow?

The business owner of the process. They decide which steps go to agents and at what depth, and they answer for the outcome. Engineering builds it; compliance reviews where people must stay involved.

Should you redesign a process before adding agents?

Often, a little. Steps that exist only to move paper between teams may disappear. Steps that exist for a control reason, such as a second check on payments, should stay, even if an agent prepares the work.

Decide what your agents may do. Prove it. Enforce it.

Pryme Intelligence certifies each agent on your own cases, checks every action against five bounds at the moment it happens, and files every verdict.
