AI agent skills by role·Definition

What is an AI governance lead?

An AI governance lead is accountable for how an organisation governs AI: policy, inventory, risk, assurance and the competence of people overseeing agents.

An AI governance lead is the person accountable for how an organisation governs its use of AI. They own the framework and policy, keep the inventory of AI systems and agents, set how risk is assessed and assured, define the competence each role needs, and report on whether the controls work. They design the rules others operate.

Why does the role matter once agents act?

When AI only drafted text, governance could sit loosely across IT, legal and compliance. Agents that execute work need someone who sees the whole picture: which agents exist, what each may do, who owns each one, whether certifications are current, and whether the people approving their work are trained. Without that view, gaps open between teams and nobody notices until something fails.

The governance lead also translates between worlds. They turn regulatory expectations into internal rules operations can follow, and turn operational evidence into reports a board can act on.

What does an AI governance lead do in practice?

The work usually covers:

  • maintaining the AI governance framework and the AI policy;
  • keeping an inventory of agents, their capabilities, depth and owners;
  • setting how AI risk assessments are done, and reviewing them;
  • defining competence standards for each role, and how they are evidenced;
  • monitoring governance measures such as lapsed certificates, overturned approvals and incidents;
  • reporting to the executive committee or board;
  • being the contact for supervisors and auditors on AI matters.

A fuller description of the job is in what an AI governance lead does. The concepts behind it are in what AI governance is and, for agents specifically, what AI agent governance is.

What is an example?

A mid-sized insurer appoints an AI governance lead as it moves from one agent to six. In the first quarter she builds an inventory and finds two agents whose owners have left. She names new owners, sets a policy that approval rights depend on a current reviewer certificate, and adds a monthly report showing each agent's certification status and each team's share of approvers with current credentials. When the board asks whether its agents are under control, she can answer with evidence rather than reassurance.

How is the governance lead different from an AI operations manager?

The governance lead sets the rules and checks they work across the organisation. The AI operations manager runs agents day to day within those rules: queues, rotas, incidents, certificates, usage. One designs the control system; the other operates it. The case that the operational role deserves its own title is made in the agent operations lead is a real job.

The governance lead also differs from a data protection officer, whose remit is personal data, and from a chief risk officer, whose remit covers all risk. The roles work closely and sometimes overlap in smaller firms. Team leads whose days change when agents arrive, described in what changes in a support team lead's day, feel the governance lead's decisions most directly.

Which terms are related?

  • AI governance framework: what the lead owns.
  • Governance literacy: what the lead tries to build in everyone else.
  • Named accountability: the principle the lead applies to every agent.

Questions people ask

Who should the AI governance lead report to?

Usually to a senior executive such as the chief risk officer or chief operating officer, with a regular line to the board or a board committee.

Does a small company need a dedicated governance lead?

It needs someone doing the job, often alongside another role. What matters is that one named person owns it.
