AI operator certification·Definition

What is an assessor sign-off?

An assessor sign-off is a named assessor's formal confirmation that a candidate met a standard. What it means for AI operator certification and why it matters.

An assessor sign-off is the formal confirmation, by a named and qualified assessor, that a candidate has met a defined standard. It turns a piece of practical work into evidence someone else can rely on. In AI operator certification, the sign-off confirms that your review decisions over a set period were correct often enough and that you missed no red line.

Why does a sign-off matter?

Anyone can say they did good work. A sign-off means an independent person looked at the evidence against a written standard and agreed. That is what separates a certificate that shows real decisions from one that only shows attendance.

For employers, the sign-off is often the part of a certificate that carries the most weight. An exam shows knowledge. A practicum signed off by an assessor shows that knowledge was used correctly on real or realistic cases.

How does it work in practice?

A typical sign-off process:

  1. The standard is published. Candidates know in advance what counts as a pass.
  2. Evidence is collected. Decisions, notes and outcomes from the practical period are recorded.
  3. The assessor reviews. They check the evidence against the standard, often sampling and questioning.
  4. The decision is recorded. Pass, or not yet, with reasons.
  5. The sign-off is filed. It becomes part of the certificate record, with the assessor identifiable.

The person doing the assessing must be independent of the candidate's own work, or the sign-off means little.

An example

Take a candidate we will call Hannah, doing the operator practicum on a simulated queue. Over two weeks she decides a set of held items: refunds, account changes and payment queries. Her record shows the correct decision in nineteen of every twenty items and no missed red line. A Pryme assessor reviews the record, asks her to explain two borderline escalations and signs off. Her certificate is then issued.

How is a sign-off different from approval or self-declaration?

Self-declaration means you state that you met a standard; nobody checks. Manager approval means your own manager agrees, which carries weight but is not independent. An assessor sign-off is independent and against a published standard.

The phrase "sign off" also appears in other settings. Whether an AI agent can sign off a set of accounts is a question about authority over financial statements, not assessment. And the argument that the process owner should sign off certification, not the vendor applies the same idea of independence to agents themselves.

Where the Academy fits

Certified Pryme Operator requires a written exam (40 questions in 60 minutes, pass mark four in five) and a two-week practicum to a standard of nineteen in twenty correct and no missed red line, signed off by a Pryme assessor. Certified Pryme Architect involves a board review with two Pryme assessors.

Questions people ask

What happens if the assessor does not sign off?

In most assessed schemes, you are told what fell short and can practise further before trying again. Treat a "not yet" as a list of what to improve, not a verdict on you.

Can my manager be my assessor?

For a Pryme certificate, the sign-off is by a Pryme assessor, not your manager. Your manager may still give useful feedback along the way.
