AI literacy and certification·Definition

What is an attestation of training?

An attestation of training is a signed statement that named people completed specified training. What it proves, and cannot, for AI agent oversight.

An attestation of training is a signed statement, made by a person or an organisation, that named individuals completed specified training by a given date. It is a declaration: the signer answers for its truth. It proves that someone vouched for the training, not that the trained person can now do the job.

Why do attestations come up with AI agents?

Clients, auditors and supervisors ask suppliers to confirm that staff overseeing AI have been trained. The quickest answer is a letter from a manager saying they have. Attestations are useful because a named person stands behind them, and a false one carries consequences for that person.

Their weakness is that they rarely say what "trained" meant. Did the reviewer watch a video, or approve real agent decisions under supervision? Does the training still apply after the agent gained a new capability? A bare attestation cannot answer, which is why the case for certifying underwriters before agents go live asks for more than a signature.

What does a useful attestation contain?

If you must give or accept one, make it specific:

  • the names and roles of the people covered;
  • the training, by title and version, and the date each person completed it;
  • how completion was assessed, if at all, and the result;
  • whether any credential was issued, its number, and its expiry;
  • the signer's name, role and the date of signing.

The more of these fields refer to records someone else can check, the more the attestation is worth.

What is an example?

A supplier running a claims operation for an insurer is asked for proof that its reviewers are trained to oversee the agent drafting settlements. Its operations director signs an attestation listing twelve reviewers, the course each completed and the date. Attached is a list of certificate numbers that the insurer can check at source. The attestation now does what it should: a named person vouches, and the claims rest on records outside the supplier's control.

How is an attestation different from a certificate?

An attestation is a declaration by someone with an interest in it being true. A certificate is issued after assessment by a body that judged the evidence, and a verifiable one can be checked with that body. One says "we say they were trained"; the other says "an assessor found they can do this, and here is where to check it is still current".

There is a second distinction for agents. In a governed platform, an agent's capability is certified by replaying it against real cases, not by attestation. A person can also be asked to sign a compliance attestation an agent helped prepare, which raises its own limits, covered in whether an AI agent can sign a compliance attestation.

Which terms are related?

  • Verifiable credential: a certificate whose status a third party can check at the issuer.
  • Over-reliance on AI: one failure good training is meant to prevent, explained in what over-reliance on AI is.
  • Training record: the underlying evidence an attestation should cite.

The wider topic is AI literacy and certification for people who work with agents.

Where the Academy fits

Pryme Intelligence Academy certificates give an attestation something to cite. They are issued through VerifyDoc.ai and can be checked at source by number or QR code, with a lapsed or revoked certificate shown as such. For teams, the admin view lists each person's results, certificates and expiry dates.

Questions people ask

Is an attestation of training legally binding?

That depends on the contract and the jurisdiction. A false attestation can create liability under a contract or a regulatory regime, so treat it as a formal statement, not a courtesy.

How often should attestations be refreshed?

Whenever the training, the agent or the team changes, and at least as often as the underlying credentials expire. An attestation older than the certificates it cites is already stale.
