A data protection officer is the person an organisation designates to advise on data protection law, monitor compliance with it, and act as the contact point for the data protection authority and for the people whose data is processed. With AI agents, the DPO checks what personal data each agent reads, why, and what it decides.
Why does a DPO matter when agents arrive?
Agents read personal data at scale and act on it. A loan agent reads bank statements; a support agent reads complaint histories; an HR agent reads absence records. Each of those is processing, and each needs a lawful basis, a purpose and limits. The DPO is the person whose job is to ask whether those exist before the agent goes live, not after a complaint.
Agents also raise questions that manual work rarely did. Under GDPR, decisions based solely on automated processing that have legal or similarly significant effects on a person carry specific protections (Article 22). New processing that is likely to pose a high risk needs a data protection impact assessment (Article 35). The DPO advises on both, and is usually the first to ask whether a given agent needs an assessment; the answer is worked through in do AI agents need a data protection impact assessment.
What does the DPO look at in an agent deployment?
- Sources. Which personal data each agent may read, and whether it needs all of it.
- Depth. Whether the agent only drafts, with a person deciding, or acts alone on decisions that affect people.
- The record. Every verdict is filed in an append-only record, which helps answer access requests and complaints, but also holds personal data that needs its own retention rules.
- Staff competence. Whether the people who review agent decisions understand what they may disclose and to whom.
An example
Take a hypothetical microfinance lender in Lagos. It plans to give new loan officers an agent that assembles applicant files from statements, identity documents and bureau reports. The DPO reviews the plan, asks that the agent read only the statement period the credit policy requires, confirms that a loan officer, not the agent, decides each application, and sets a retention period for the drafts the agent produces. The onboarding steps that follow are in how to onboard a new loan officer to an AI agent workspace.
In Nigeria, the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission shape that review; the detail is in the Nigeria Data Protection Act and AI agents.
How is a DPO different from a data controller?
The data controller is the organisation that decides why and how personal data is processed, and it carries legal responsibility. The DPO is a person inside or appointed by that organisation who advises and monitors. The DPO does not own the processing and should not be the person deciding it, which is why a DPO should not also be the agent owner for an agent that processes personal data. That would make them the monitor of their own decisions.
A DPO is also different from an information security lead. Security protects data from unauthorised access; the DPO asks whether authorised processing is lawful, fair and proportionate.

Where the Academy fits
A DPO does not need to run a review queue, but does need to read how agents decide. Pryme Intelligence Academy's Foundations track, about four hours and free, covers the decision chain, depth and certification, and ownership, data and trust, which is the working vocabulary a DPO needs to question an agent deployment.
Questions people ask
Does every organisation need a DPO?
No. Data protection laws require one only in certain cases, typically for public bodies and for organisations whose core work involves large-scale monitoring or sensitive data. Many others appoint one voluntarily. Confirm your position with counsel.
Should the DPO approve every new agent?
The DPO should be consulted on any agent that processes personal data. Approval itself usually sits with the business owner, informed by the DPO's advice, which should be recorded.
