An edge case is a situation at the outer limit of what a rule, process or system was designed to handle: the amount exactly at the threshold, or the document dated on the last valid day. For AI agents, edge cases are where the agent is most likely to be held or refused, and where reviewers most need training.
Why do edge cases matter for agents and their reviewers?
Routine work is easy to certify. An agent that drafts a hundred ordinary refunds correctly tells you little about the refund that sits exactly at the customer's limit, or arrives with one missing field. Those are the cases that end up in front of a person.
So reviewers spend a large share of their time on edge cases, even though edge cases are a small share of the volume. Training that only shows typical items prepares people for the work the agent already handles, not the work it passes to them.
How do edge cases show up in practice?
They tend to cluster in a few places:
| Where | Example |
|---|---|
| Limits | A payment of exactly the approval threshold |
| Time | An instruction received after a cut-off, or on a holiday |
| Identity | A customer with two accounts under slightly different names |
| Sources | A policy that changed between the request and the decision |
| Scope | A request half inside the agent's role and half outside it |
Each one tests a different bound in the minimum chain. A reviewer who knows which bound is under strain knows where to look in the record.
What does an edge case look like in a real team?
Take an AML team where an agent assembles case files. Most alerts are clear. The edge case: a customer whose transactions fall just below the reporting threshold several times in a week. The agent can gather the facts and draft the file at depth 2, but the judgement about structuring stays with the investigator. Whether an agent can investigate an AML case depends on exactly this division.
Building the file is described in letting an agent build case files in your case management system. Training the investigator to recognise the pattern is a separate job.
How is an edge case different from an exception?
An exception is anything outside the normal path, including plain errors such as a missing document. An edge case is still inside the rule's design but at its boundary. The difference matters for training: exceptions need procedures, while edge cases need judgement about where the line falls.
An edge case also differs from a counterexample, which is a case that looks routine but proves a common assumption wrong.
How should edge cases be used in training and certification?
Collect them. A case library of real edge cases from your own record, stripped of personal data, is the best training material you will have. The same cases should test the agent: the argument that edge cases belong in the certification set, not in a footnote applies to people and agents alike. Attest replays an agent against real cases from the customer's own operation, so edge cases in that set raise the bar where it counts.
The word "case" is overloaded. A business case for agents is a funding argument, not a test item. For the wider training approach, see training teams for AI agents.
Where the Academy fits
Module tests in Pryme Intelligence Academy are set in the learner's own industry and role, which is where edge cases live. The Operator practicum uses real review decisions over two weeks, so the edge cases a reviewer meets are the ones their own workspace produces.
Questions people ask
Who should collect edge cases?
Reviewers, as they meet them. Give them a simple way to flag an item as an edge case with one line on why, and have the agent owner review the flags weekly.
Can an agent be trained to handle every edge case?
No, and it should not try. Some edge cases should stay with a person by design, and the agent's bounds should hold them.
