An exception handler is a person whose job is to deal with the cases that fall outside a process's normal rules: the claim with missing evidence, the payment that does not match, the customer whose situation the policy did not foresee. With AI agents, exception handlers take the items an agent holds, refuses or escalates, and decide them.
A word on the other meaning
In software, an exception handler is a block of code that catches an error and decides what the program does next. This article is about the job, not the code. The two share an idea: something unexpected happened, and something has to decide the next step deliberately rather than let it fail.
Why does exception handling become a job of its own?
As agents take on routine work, the remaining human work concentrates on what does not fit. In a claims team, an agent may complete simple glass claims at depth 3 while holding anything that involves injury, a disputed amount or a fact that arrived from an unverified source. The people deciding those held items are exception handlers, whatever their title says.
That makes the work harder and more valuable. Every case is unusual, the stakes are higher and the decision is filed under a named person. Employers want people who stay calm with ambiguity and write down why they decided as they did.
What does the work look like in practice?
An exception handler typically:
- Picks up held, refused or escalated items from a queue.
- Reads the facts and where each came from: sealed records, signed statements, declared claims or external documents.
- Decides within their authority, or escalates further.
- Records a short reason, which later improves the agent's brief.
- Spots repeats: an "exception" that arrives every day is a gap in the process.
An example
Take a claims handler we will call Rafael at a motor insurer. The agent holds a claim because the repair invoice came by email from a garage it cannot verify, and an external claim cannot authorise a payment. Rafael calls the garage, confirms the invoice, records the check and approves the payment within his limit. He notes that the same garage appears often and suggests adding it as a signed source. That is exception handling done well. Whether this kind of role is secure is discussed in is a claims handler job safe from AI agents?.
How is an exception handler different from exception handling?
Exception handling is the process: how a business detects, routes and resolves cases that break its rules. The exception handler is the person inside that process. A business can have a good process and poor handlers, or the reverse.

The Operator track of Pryme Intelligence Academy covers how a governed agent decides, human review and when something goes wrong, which is the daily ground of exception work. Its practicum asks for nineteen in twenty correct decisions and no missed red line, signed off by an assessor.

Questions people ask
Is exception handler a job title?
Sometimes, especially in payments and trade operations. More often the work sits inside titles like case manager, senior handler or reviewer. Read the duties for words like exceptions, escalations and referrals.
What makes someone good at handling exceptions?
Patience with incomplete facts, knowing the policy well enough to see its edges, and the discipline to record a reason every time. Speed comes later.
