AI skills for job seekers·Definition

What is a hard skill?

A hard skill is a specific, teachable ability that can be tested and shown. The hard skills AI operations roles ask for and how they differ from soft ones.

A hard skill is a specific, teachable ability that can be tested and demonstrated, such as reconciling a ledger, writing a formula or reading a decision record. You can learn it from instruction and practice, and someone else can check whether you have it. Hard skills sit alongside soft skills, which are about how you work with people and pressure.

Why do hard skills matter for AI operations roles?

Much talk about AI careers is vague: "be adaptable", "understand AI". Employers hiring someone to oversee agents need something firmer. They want to know you can do particular things on day one, and hard skills are the ones they can test in an exercise or check on a certificate.

The hard skills that matter most here are not technical in the programming sense. They are about knowing what an agent may do and checking that it did it. That point is argued in the skill gap is not technical; it is knowing what an agent may do.

Which hard skills do AI operations roles ask for?

  • Reading a decision record: what the agent proposed, which bound decided the verdict, who approved.
  • Applying depth and limits: knowing whether an action is read, draft, routine execution or something that moves money, and what that means for who must approve.
  • Checking sources: tracing a claim to its origin and judging how much weight it can bear.
  • Writing a decision rationale: a short reason a colleague or auditor can follow.
  • Teaching the agent: turning a correction into a change to the agent's sources or brief, through the proper route.
  • Reading usage and cost: understanding what the workspace is spending and why.

Each can be practised, tested and shown. That is the test of a hard skill, and why every AI skill on your CV should be checkable.

What is an example?

An office administrator we will call Paul wants to move into an agent operations role. His CV lists "AI skills". He rewrites it into hard skills: "Reviewed agent-drafted supplier updates against source records; wrote rationales for each decision; escalated changes from unverified sources." In an interview, he is handed a printed decision record and asked what happened. He explains the proposed action, the bound that held it and why the approver was right to reject it. The interviewer has just tested a hard skill in two minutes.

How is a hard skill different from a soft skill?

A hard skill is a defined ability with a right way to do it: you can read a decision record correctly or not. A soft skill is a way of working, such as communicating clearly, staying calm or handling disagreement, which shows across many tasks and is harder to test in isolation. It is explained in what a soft skill is.

The line blurs in review work. Escalation draws on a hard skill (knowing the limits) and a soft one (raising a concern clearly to someone senior). Employers want both, and a skill that is ready to use on day one is what they call a job-ready skill.

Which terms are related?

  • Technical skill: a hard skill that involves tools or systems; not all hard skills are technical.
  • Transferable skill: a skill that moves with you between jobs.
  • Competency: a skill described with the behaviours that show it.

Where the Academy fits

The Operator track at Pryme Intelligence Academy is built around hard skills of this kind: reading the workspace, human review, teaching the agent, keeping knowledge current, usage and billing. The written exam tests that you know them, and the two-week practicum tests that you can apply them. How demanding that is gets a fair answer in how hard the AI operator certificate is.

Questions people ask

Do I need to learn to code to work in AI operations?

Not for most operator and reviewer roles. The hard skills are about decisions, limits and sources. Coding helps in builder roles that design and configure agents.

How many hard skills should I list on a CV?

Four to six that match the advert, each with a short example. A long list with no examples reads as keywords; a short list with evidence reads as experience.
