AI agent skills by role·Definition

What is hypercare?

Hypercare is a short period of intensified support after an AI agent goes live or gains depth, with daily review, fast response and a ready fallback.

Hypercare is a short period of intensified support straight after an AI agent goes live, or after one of its capabilities moves to a higher depth. The team reads the agent's verdicts daily, checks more of its work than usual, responds within hours and keeps a tested fallback ready, until the agent's behaviour settles.

Why is hypercare needed?

Because no amount of testing fully predicts live work. Certification replays the agent against the business's own past cases, which is strong evidence. But live work brings new customers, new phrasing, seasonal patterns and the occasional document format nobody has seen. The first weeks are when those surprises arrive, and when reviewers are least practised at catching them.

Hypercare also protects the people. A team that has just started reviewing held actions at volume needs fast answers to questions such as "is this hold right?" or "should I approve this?". A head of customer service planning a launch has to staff for that, a point developed in what a head of customer service needs to know about AI agents.

What happens during hypercare?

  • Daily review of the record. Volumes of allowed, held and refused verdicts, the bounds that decided them, and any change from the day before.
  • Heavier sampling. A larger share of the agent's routine actions is checked after the fact than in normal running.
  • A short line to decision-makers. Reviewers can reach the agent owner and process owner the same day.
  • A ready fallback. The team knows exactly how to drop the agent to draft-only mode, and who may decide to.
  • Clear exit criteria. Hypercare ends when the agreed signals are stable, not on a date chosen in advance.

An example

Take a hypothetical group of dental clinics. An appointments agent goes live at depth 3 for rebooking and reminders, and holds anything involving clinical questions or fees for the practice manager. Hypercare runs for three weeks. In the first week the practice manager reviews the full list of the agent's actions each evening and finds that it treats "can I bring my child?" as a booking request rather than a question. The agent owner adds a rule to the brief, the next day's record is clean, and by week three the review drops to a daily sample. How practice managers handle the agent's held items is covered in how clinic practice managers handle an action an AI agent has held for them.

How is it different from a shadow period?

A shadow period comes before go-live. The agent works cases alongside people but nothing it produces is used; the two are compared afterwards. Hypercare comes after go-live. The agent is acting for real, and hypercare is the extra watchfulness that surrounds those first live actions. Shadow answers "is it ready?"; hypercare answers "is it behaving as expected now that it is live?".

Hypercare also follows the go/no-go decision. A good go decision names the hypercare plan, its owner and its exit criteria as conditions of going live.

How long should it last?

Long enough to see the full cycle of the work at least once. For daily work, two to four weeks is common. For processes with monthly peaks, such as payroll or month-end close, hypercare should cover at least one peak. The guide to AI agent skills by role shows who typically runs it.

Where the Academy fits

Hypercare is where the Operator track at Pryme Intelligence Academy is used under pressure. Its modules on reading the workspace and when something goes wrong cover what the daily review looks for, and its practicum of two weeks of real review decisions often runs during this period.

Questions people ask

Who leads hypercare?

Usually the agent owner, with the process owner accountable for the outcome. Both should be available daily throughout the period.

What ends hypercare early?

Nothing should end it early. An incident during hypercare should extend it, and may lead to a drop to draft-only mode until the cause is fixed.
